Trump's threat to start a new party designed to give him leverage during impeachment: report

Snip

Donald Trump has been ridiculed over reports he is considering starting a "Patriot Party" to compete against the GOP, but the effort may be designed as an impeachment defense, according to a new report in The Washington Post.

"In recent weeks, Trump has entertained the idea of creating a third party, called the Patriot Party, and instructed his aides to prepare election challenges to lawmakers who crossed him in the final weeks in office, including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC), according to people familiar with the plans," Josh Dawsey and Michael Scherer reported for The Post on Saturday.

"Multiple people in Trump's orbit, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations, say Trump has told people that the third party threat gives him leverage to prevent Republican senators from voting to convict him during the Senate impeachment trial," The Post explained. "Trump advisers also say they plan to recruit opposing primary candidates and commission polling next week in districts of targeted lawmakers. Trump has more than $70 million in campaign cash banked to fund his political efforts, these people say."

Those others are low tier substitutes. And Cruz in particularly may not be a fascist so much as a conservative.

Almost 74 million people voted for that monster. That is more than enough to have him win a primary race. I want Trump convicted of his crimes NOW and sent to infamy, I don’t want him hanging around like some spray tanned Freddie Krueger.

I think that fascists would generally be happy with that scenario. That's why I don't think that fascists would be happy with Trump being prevented from running again.

the next four years. And republicans are being clear that the majority of them will be throwing up roadblocks the entire way. One of the biggest mistakes that I believe that President Obama made during the recovery in 2009, 2010 (the benefit of hindsight) was not totally prioritizing the needs of everyday Americans over banks and big corporations. People lost their homes, even the ones who were not doing stupid house flipping when houses were selling in days.

It seems that President Biden realizes where things were not done to the extent they should have been and seems determined to avoid repeating those mistakes. But even with that, bringing the country back fully from Trump’s disaster is going to be a massively hard job that could come up short. If we get populists pointing out the shortcomings instead of all the successes and promising salad days if only they were elected. Situations like that would be ripe for Trump winning the presidency again, or someone worse that him, because there are enough soft-headed Americans left out there to get taken by the lies instead of using their head and electing strong leaders who solve problems instead of demagogue and blame others.

We can’t risk a Trump being in a position to become president again, because if we do, our democracy is gone, because that person won’t make mistake concerning corrupting our democratic institutions again (Trump was trying, but made enough mistakes that he could not complete his goal).

If they convict him, he takes him ball and goes home to a new party.

If they don't convict him, the normal republicans and independents will leave the GOP.

THey'll squabble over 75% of 30% of the electorate.

Meanwhile, so much winning.

GOP Senators know this. Those with Presidential aspirations should vote to impeach and to bar Trump from assuming office again. Those that rely on Trump sycophant campaign funds for Senate re-election and are devoid of any integrity will have a tougher time.

Either way the Repukes vote is going to force a breakup of their party.

The end result is a solid break between the remaining fence sitting Repukes and die hard Dumpists, no matter how they vote.

It would make him illegible to run for office ever again. Besides Trump starting a 3rd party is not going to attract the mega donors or Corporate Pac money and that's what we wants. MAGAs don't have the kind money Trump wants from running for POTUS again.
