McConnell privately says he wants Trump gone but faces backlash--CNN obtains 9-point memo to get rid

of Trump

As the House prepares to send an article of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, CNN has learned that dozens of influential Republicans around Washington -- including former top Trump administration officials -- have been quietly lobbying GOP members of Congress to impeach and convict Donald Trump. The effort is not coordinated but reflects a wider battle inside the GOP between those loyal to Trump and those who want to sever ties and ensure he can never run for President again.

The lobbying started in the House after the January 6 attack on the Capitol and in the days leading up to impeachment. But it's now more focused on Sen. Mitch McConnell, the powerful minority leader who has signaled he may support convicting Trump.

-snip-

McConnell had proposed delaying the trial until February, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Friday that arguments would begin on February 9. It would take 17 Republicans to join all 50 Democrats in order to convict. While the bar is high, some GOP sources think there is more of an appetite to punish the former President than is publicly apparent.

"There were 10 House Republicans who voted for impeachment. There were probably over 150 who supported it," said Charlie Dent, a former Republican congressman and CNN contributor.

I take that to mean most Republicans never had the guts to stand up to Trump. They may not have liked him but felt Trump's supporters were the key to the GOP keeping power.

If the Repuke party senators facilitate conviction, the Dumpists separate to form a Dumpist Party.

The end result is a Dumpist Party. The difference is just the label applied to it.

I think I saw Rick Wilson say maybe around 10 pct or so of them.

Either way, what will be left is the Dumpist core. Probably around 30-35 pct of the electorate.

Here’s a HUGE problem with the Electoral College. Someone could actually be “selected” in a three way race with as low as 34 pct of the vote.

34-33-33.

That should scare the shit out of people.

He has no intention of voting to convict. He never has.

He's trying to appear reasonable, and people are falling for it.

"There were 10 House Republicans who voted for impeachment. There were probably over 150 who supported it," said Charlie Dent, a former Republican congressman and CNN contributor."

No, there weren't. Their jobs were always priority one and their constituents wouldn't have stood for them supporting impeachment. Statements like that always make me laugh.

I think they'll get a few Republicans voting to convict. Sure hope so.
