Jimmie Rodgers, singer of 'Honeycomb' and other hits, dies

PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) — Jimmie Rodgers, singer of the 1957 hits “Honeycomb” and “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” whose career in music and movies was disrupted by a severe head injury a decade later, has died at age 87.

Rodgers died from kidney disease on Jan. 18 in Palm Desert, California, and had also tested positive for COVID-19, publicist Alan Eichler said Saturday, citing family.

Rodgers performed for $10 a night around Nashville while stationed there with the U.S. Air Force after the Korean War. He appeared on a talent show and got an audition with Roulette Records, which signed him after hearing him perform “Honeycomb,” a song by Bob Merrill.

With a style of singing and playing guitar that included elements of country, folk and pop, the Camas, Washington native recorded many other Top 10 hits during the late 1950s, including “Secretly," “Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again,” and “Are You Really Mine?”

The pioneer was from Mississippi: 1897-1933

This Jimmie Rodgers was from Washington State. Appeared on the charts, late 50's, early 60's, country/pop

Ironically they both had their careers cut short. The first one died very young. The one who just died had Spasmodic Dysphonia, a vocal disorder that affects the nerves and muscles that control the larynx.

was from Meridian, where I’ve got people. Oddly, though Lord knows they were country fans, my folks weren’t into him. But I knew “Honeycomb” from when I was a wee tiny thing. And I would SOB every time I heard “Their Hearts Were Full of Spring.” I was a tender little thing. 😌

and infinitely superior to the other one. He was a megastar in his day, comparable in stardom to Michael Jackson at his peak.

That's Louis Armstrong playing the trumpet.

I was sixteen when that cop almost killed him in April, 1967. It cut close to home, my being from LA. I wasn’t particularly religious, but I prayed for days for him to live.

I was lucky enough to see him in 1989 at an oldies but goodies show at the Greek Theater. He made a joke about his singing for a Spaghetti-Os commercial. “Uh Oh, Spaghetti-os.” Strangely, his was the only act I remember.
