The video footage is clear, and hard to watch: a Tacoma Police patrol car running into and through a group of pedestrians.
The 48-second clip, shot shortly before 7 p.m., was shot in the downtown area. The patrol car, surrounded by groups of shouting people, revs its engine and suddenly surges forward, appearing to strike the group and possibly run over individuals before driving on.
Mark, the eyewitness who shot the video and provided it to The News Tribune, saw five to six cars spinning in circles on South 9th Street between the intersections of Court A and Pacific Avenue.
A crowd of three dozen people were gathered around the intersection, cheering on the drivers, Mark said. Traffic through the area came to a standstill.
Mark, who asked that his last name not be used, said a fire truck first went through the intersection, temporarily putting a stop to the action. But the racers and crowd quickly reformed.

(25,364 posts)The thing is: This scene was dangerous...I saw what they were doing, but there is only one cop. So, he should have radioed for back up because the situation was not safe. He is claiming they were trying to break his cruiser windows, but I think he could have waited for back up. I don't think they would have harmed the cop if the windows broke.

(25,364 posts)I think all this street racing is a by productive of Covid. Young adults are bored and this is a new past time. It has become an issue in my city.

(CNN)A man who claims he was struck by a police cruiser in Tacoma, Washington -- an incident that sparked a weekend protest -- said he will recover from his injuries "but emotionally and mentally, I'm forever scarred."
About 150 people gathered in downtown Tacoma on Sunday to protest the city's police department after an officer drove into a crowd Saturday night, police public information officer Wendy Haddow told CNN.
Two people were taken to the hospital following the incident, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT), which is now leading the investigation. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening and at least one person has since been released.
Tavon Williams, of nearby Spanaway, said he was among the injured.
Williams told CNN on Monday the incident left both of his legs bruised and covered in lacerations and he has cuts and bruises on his feet, neck, elbow and head. Williams said he was hospitalized overnight and released Sunday.
It could have been much worse. I was afraid the guy would be paralyzed
