Impeachment manager Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) made a clear and concise case for why Donald Trump should be convicted in the Senates upcoming impeachment trial.
Rep. Swalwell said:
Theres a lot of witnesses to this crime. But I think its also important that we frame this as this was not a heat of passion crime. This didnt happen spontaneously with words just slipping out of Donald Trumps mouth at that rally. For months he had propagated this big lie to radicalize these terrorists, to call in the cavalry to Washington. And he called it Stop the Steal. And if youre not an elected representative, the only way that you can stop the steal is by taking a physical act. And he told them, dont show weakness. Youll lose your country if you dont fight. And then he would go with them to the Capitol. Of course, he didnt. And then most importantly, for two hours they attacked the Capitol, and the president said nothing.

(5,170 posts)His party members in our Congress also validated his claim and incited the mob to give up their possessions, lives, and livelihoods to save America. Other Congress members emailed or tweeted that they were fighting in the session or Congress's movement. Police stood down or opened gates. No military back up for hours! It was corrdinated.

(17,918 posts)And acting Sec Def Miller and his henchman Patel trying to get in front of this with only a fraction of the story, blaming Donnie for it all, when they had a part. If not in commission, in omission. I'm not buying their stories. Compared to the facts that we know, they make no sense. They at least knew about it. If they didn't need presidential approval, as they said, why did they act so slowly? Why did it take hours of pleading? And Flynn's brother. He played an active part in that, I'd bet dollars to donuts. This whole goddamn thing stinks to high heaven.

(15,215 posts)The only thing solid evidence can do is make the craven politics and obstinate denial of reality a little harder to pull off.
We've sadly learned that Republicans are nearly boundless in these capacities.
Our best hope (and at least the quality of the evidence against Trump somewhat matters here) is that Republicans reach a political calculation in sufficient numbers that the smart thing to do is cut Trump loose.

(17,918 posts)My prediction is...as the investigations unwind, not being on the right side of history is going to be really costly to any Republican except those from the reddest of red states. Don't think this will fade away. The investigations and criminal charges are just getting started. And when it's done, it will shake the foundations of the country. This shit is THAT bad.

(70,508 posts)"Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!"
And his campaign paid for the riot too.
Former President Donald Trump's re-election campaign paid more than $2.7 million to several individuals and firms who helped to organize the Washington rally that preceded the violent storming of the Capitol on January 6, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
The payments indicate an ongoing financial relationship between the rally's organizers and Trump's political campaign. Financial disclosures show that the campaign made payments up until November 23, the most recent date covered by Federal Election Commission (FEC) fillings. The rally was announced in December.

Of the 12 people listed on the permit as onsite contacts, seven were on the Trump campaign's payroll during the 2020 election, according to campaign finance records -- many of whom worked in roles that involved event planning or production.
They include Justin Caporale, the Trump campaign's director of advance and a former director of operations for first lady Melania Trump, who was listed on the permit as the project manager for the rally; Megan Powers, who worked as director of operations for Trump's campaign through January 2021, according to her LinkedIn page, and was listed as an operations manager for the rally; and Maggie Mulvaney, the niece of former White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and the director of finance operations for the Trump campaign, who was listed as the rally's VIP lead.

Trump allies helped plan, promote rally that led to Capitol attack
The president urged a sea of supporters to march to the Capitol.
In the days before a violent mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday, President Donald Trump's political apparatus worked behind the scenes with pro-Trump groups to plan and promote events in Washington, D.C., that ultimately led to Wednesday's attack on Congress.
Speaking at the "March to Save America" rally at the Ellipse in President's Park on Wednesday, President Trump urged a sea of supporters to march to the Capitol in protest of the Electoral College vote count -- telling the crowd he'd join them but ultimately not doing so -- after delivering a speech pushing baseless and unfounded claims that the election was rigged and telling the rowdy crowd that "you'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength."
Trump's order sent thousands of his supporters marching to the Capitol, where some would overpower law enforcement, topple barricades and riot inside the halls of Congress in an unprecedented attack that left five people dead.
While the "March to Save America" rally was publicly promoted as being organized by groups not directly tied to the president's team, including "Women for America First" and "Stop the Steal," behind the scenes White House staff and close allies of the president, including former Trump campaign staff, worked with the organizers to plan and promote the events on Wednesday that would ultimately erupt into the deadly storming of the Capitol, sources said.
A permit for the rally submitted by "Women for America First" Executive Director Kylie Jane Kremer -- the daughter of the group's founder, former Tea Party activist Amy Kremer -- was approved on January 4. The permit stated that the event would take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 30,000 attendees, according to documents obtained by ABC News.

The Washington Post reports that the Army "falsely denied for days that Lt. Gen. Charles A. Flynn" was involved in the key meetings. One of the officials who was on the call told CNN in the days following the insurrection at the Capitol that Flynn was not on the calls, but the military did not confirm his participation until Wednesday.

(1,193 posts)The entire conspiracy is obvious to all who have eyes that see and ears that hear. Still the Republicans, with their heads in the sand, pretend there is nothing there.
Why? Because they fear losing their power, hate those who are not white christians, and are ignorant of history.

(17,918 posts)Trying to get out in front of the coming debacle through impeachment. It may seem politically dicey at first, but will make perfect sense as the investigations unfold. For many, it's their only hope. When the depth and breadth of this insurrection are made known, only those in ruby red states and districts will be safe. As people are indicted, tried and convicted, particularly those elected to Congress and appointed positions of responsibility, it will seem like a crime to have even known Donnie in early weeks of 2021. This shit is THAT fucking big and that fucking bad! In my mind, impeachment is the least of Donnie's problems. It's going to be really, really ugly for Republicans and no amount of scrubbing will get rid of the stench.
My prediction for the coming weeks and months.

(70,508 posts)This was at Donny's "Stop the Steal" rally prior to the Pro Trump Fox News Riot @ the Capitol.
Brooks has come under fire for comments at the rally in which he told the crowd that he wanted them to take a message back home and along the way stop at the Capitol. Today is the day that American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass, Brooks said at the Save America rally on Wednesday that preceded the riot at the U.S. Capitol. He was wearing a hat that said, Fire Pelosi.
snip
Brooks office issued a lengthy statement saying his rally remarks were meant to inspire the crowd to fight in the 2022 and 2024 elections.
I was not encouraging anyone to engage in violence. I was encouraging people to begin a 2022 and 2024 election fight, Brooks wrote. No one at the rally interpreted my remarks to be anything other than what they were: A pep talk after the derriere kicking conservatives suffered in the dismal 2020 elections, Brooks said.
snip
Brooks said Tuesday that his critics are misrepresenting his remarks, which were intended as a pep talk for the next election cycle. He added that, I will never apologize for fighting to win our causes at the ballot box.
snip
State Rep. Chris England, the chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party, in a series of tweets, said Brooks played a role in inciting the violence and had for weeks been lying to the public and whipping people into a frenzy that he and crew were going to stop the steal Wednesday.
So, @RepMoBrooks, what did you think was going to happen after you spent weeks lying to people to get them riled up and then ask them are they willing to sacrifice their blood, sweat, tears, livelihoods and even their lives? This is your failed coup, England tweeted.

(11,989 posts)...that for two hours, he made no attempt whatsoever to quell it.
Maybe you can argue about whether or not he "ordered" it. And maybe we'll learn more about behind the scenes cooperation/encouragement between him, members of congress, and participants. But regardless of any of that, it was obviously being done by people who wanted to stop the transition from Trump to Biden. Trump was in the unique position of being able to help bring it under control, both by virtue of being the most powerful man in the country AND the fact that it was essentially being done in his name (regardless of whether or not he were to admit he instigated it). But he did nothing. So at the very least, he chose to permit it.

(6,531 posts)He did what he always does, tiptoeing through the dung heaps he has strewn about. He knows how to play a crowd with plausible deniability.
But, he absolutely DID incite that riot. No amount of "I said I knew they would peaceably demonstrate" will change the fact that he was standing up there telling them they got robbed, they should march on the Capitol, and that he would be with them. None of them would think that he was MLK urging nonviolent demonstrations.
Plus, he used people who worked for him, or people who he had authority over, to use far more forceful language to tune the crowd up. This was his customary keep-a-third-party-between-you-and-the-mark tactic. So, he has Rudy up there urging them to fight.
You're not allowed to do that. It doesn't matter how subtle you think it is. And, it was all preplanned, as he said, "See you there."
Also, he said he would be walking with them. This was a blatant attempt to influence the counting of the Electoral vote, which is insurrection, with or without violence. He's guilty as hell.
