The Unthinkable Question?

Should Donald Trump be arrested and tried for Sedition against the United States of America?

I ask the question in the spirit of free speech and open discussion, with utmost honesty and sincerity, understanding that some words and thoughts can be revolutionary. Our thoughts have evolved with each passing day since January 6th. We learn more with each day's revelations.

The "Capitol Coup" was not his first rodeo. It was planned over some period of time.

The latest bombshell that has exploded states that he wanted the DOJ to act on his behalf when he fired the "acting" Attorney General. We do not know how much William Barr knew about these conspiracies when he resigned?

But the "Capitol Coup" was not a solitary event. It was the final attempt to overthrow an election that Mr Trump had lost by a large margin. Although he had never reached 50% approval in the polls during his four years in the White House, he insisted that he had won in a landslide.

But there were indicators of sedition from his first day in office when the FBI overheard suspicious conversations between National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and the Russian Ambassador. Everything Mr Trump did from that day forward seemed to favor Russia and Vladimir Putin. But no one knew why? We still do not know.

He stood on a stage with Putin in Helsinki and took the side of Russia over American intelligence. That moment still stands out in the roadmap of his betrayal.

Would it be worth it to try Donald Trump in a court of law? Would it create too much division and violence for our country? Those are questions that need to be asked. Justice itself is on trial.

Let the Senate trial proceed. There is now a significant chance he might get convicted there. mcCONnell would like to see him dry up and disappear, or at least purged from the party. Even if not convicted, tRump is likely to get more than a couple of Republicons vote against him.

That's what we call "a good start".

We know the rioters had inside help and outside help. Handle it like an organized crime investigation. Work your way up. It is a deep conspiracy and the upper layers have tried to handle it all by a wink and a nod, but fundamentally the tRump Gang are amateurs so there will be evidence.

Blocking the National Guards was enabled by installation of civilian minions at Defense Department, which was enabled by firing Esper Nov 9, who had stood up to tRump in June.

We know that Caldwell coordinated with someone inside the Capitol with knowledge of movements. He texted "Inside" and then got a message telling him lawmakers were in the tunnels and gave him explicit directions.

Work it.

YES!
Trump has to be held respondsible for something so wrong as the sitting president provoking insurgency at the nation's capital.
There are few things a sitting president could do that are MORE traitorous or wrong.
There has to be ACCOUNTABILITY! They knew exactly what they were doing was wrong....absolutely no excuse.
The lack of accountability is how we got here!
The president's pardon power goes too far. It should not cover sedition. That can pardon a traitor such as Micheal Flynn
who should spend many years in prison.

This is but one indication that Donald Trump has successfully "softened" American resistance to Russian dictatorship, at least among a significant portion of citizens. This is in addition to welcoming Russian interference in the 2016 election, groveling to Putin during the Helsinki debacle, withdrawing from Syria and allowing Russians to take over American military installments, saying and doing nothing in response to the bounties placed on the heads of American service members, saying and doing nothing in response to the latest Russian hacking of hundreds of American governmental and business computing systems, and on and on and on. And that's just the stuff we know about.

Then to have him actually incite a violent overthrow of the US government?

Oh, hell, yes. He should be tried for sedition.

And their boundless gullibility, too, to have fallen under Trump's spell. It reminds me of that poem "The Spider and the Fly":

The Spider and the Fly
By Mary Howitt
Will you walk into my parlour? said the spider to the fly.
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy,
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to shew when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair, can ne'er come down again.

I'm sure you must be weary, dear, with soaring up so high
Will you rest upon my little bed? said the Spider to the Fly.
There are pretty curtains drawn around; the sheets are fine and thin,
And if you like to rest awhile, I'll snugly tuck you in!

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, for I've often heard it said
They never, never wake again, who sleep upon your bed!

Said the cunning Spider to the Fly, Dear friend what can I do,
To prove the warm affection I 've always felt for you?
I have within my pantry, good store of all that's nice
I'm sure you're very welcome, will you please to take a slice?

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, Kind Sir, that cannot be,
I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!

Sweet creature! said the Spider, you're witty and you're wise,
How handsome are your gauzy wings, how brilliant are your eyes!
I've a little looking-glass upon my parlour shelf,
If you'll step in one moment, dear, you shall behold yourself.

I thank you, gentle sir, she said, for what you 're pleased to say,
And bidding you good morning now, I'll call another day.

The Spider turned him round about, and went into his den,
For well he knew the silly Fly would soon come back again
So he wove a subtle web, in a little corner sly,
And set his table ready, to dine upon the Fly.

Then he came out to his door again, and merrily did sing,
Come hither, hither, pretty Fly, with the pearl and silver wing,
Your robes are green and purple, there's a crest upon your head
Your eyes are like the diamond bright, but mine are dull as lead!

Alas, alas! How very soon this silly little Fly,
Hearing his wily, flattering words, came slowly flitting by
With buzzing wings she hung aloft, then near and nearer drew,
Thinking only of her brilliant eyes, and green and purple hue
Thinking only of her crested head, poor foolish thing!

At last,
Up jumped the cunning Spider, and fiercely held her fast.
He dragged her up his winding stair, into his dismal den,
Within his little parlour, but she ne'er came out again!

And now dear little children, who may this story read,
To idle, silly flattering words, I pray you ne'er give heed.
Unto an evil counsellor, close heart and ear and eye,
And take a lesson from this tale, of the Spider and the Fly.

They must not teach this poem in school anymore!

from 'A Wrinkle In Time', believe it or not. As a kid, I read that book over and over, and the one thing that truly scared me was the planet Camazotz. How they were all just automatons and did everything in sync and they did the same things over and over while vacuously existing. I remember reading that part and having a chill run through me. These cultists are like the citizens of Camazotz. Blinded, oblivious and led by the nose. Should we be sad for them? Sure. Should we allow them to continue? Never. These are the easily led in our country. They are sheep. We need to treat them like the children they are, for only children would fall for such insanity.

If I remember correctly, these two books were required reading when I was in school. The bulk of my school years (elementary, junior high school and senior high school) was in the 1970s, and I think the teachers of that decade, the younger ones, were hot off the 60s and had a lot of that progressive, inclusive, social equality, think-for-yourself, free-to-be-you-and-me energy of the late 60s/early 70s, which they passed along to us. They did this not so much by openly instructing us in progressive ideas but by introducing them through the books they assigned us to read and just by their (always hated this word, but) groovy selves. And I'm so glad they did.

I still love 'Animal Farm' for what it says. But, that one did not affect me on the primal level that the scenes on Camazotz did. Not sure why, but to this day, the thought of vacuous, smiling humans walking without a clue scares me. Or worse, like that episode of Star Trek TOS called 'Return of the Archons'... when Kirk and co. beam down to a planet where everyone is just walking around with a smile and a wave, yet once they decide something is not right, they turn into mindless killers. That is such an analogy of what we are dealing with, except for the fact that, in the episode, the people are basically controlled by force. The ones we have to deal with are controlled by brainwashing. Hard to say which is worse really.

The bulk of my school years was also in the 70s. I read 'A Wrinkle In Time' when I was around 7-8. (I am a very early reader.) One of my mother's fave stories is when I was 11. She had purchased and read the new novel 'Jaws', and had just laid it on the dining room cupboard one day. She then realized it was not there and asked about it a month or so later. I said, "Oh, I have it."

"Why do you have it?"
"I was reading it. But I am done with it, so I can put it back."
"You read the entire book?"
"Yes, ma'am." Stunned silence for a moment, then she asked.
"Did you like it?"
"Oh yes ma'am, I did!" (I am all about the beach and the ocean anyway, so that one was a no brainer. Plus, the cover had an image of a person about to be eaten by a huge shark, so I was all over it. Right after this, I bought my first King novel, 'Salem's Lot', and never looked back.)

day without the fear of catching Covid!

I was an early reader, too. Love your "Jaws" story! My odd-thing-for-a-kid-to-read moment was when I read "Gone With the Wind" as a sixth grader. it wasn't until I got to be an adult and reread it that I realized how much of it was racially offensive. At the tender age of 12, though, the book had a positive effect: It got me interested in black literature, and I started reading things like "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Song of Solomon" and "Invisible Man" and took a class in black lit. in college.

All of these books were in my public junior high school's library. Hope they still are (although now I'm sure it's called a "middle school"!).

Have a good evening, OldBaldy!

Disqualify him and put him on the side burner.

Roll up the insurrectionist mob. All should have records after this, even if lightly for those who remained non-violent.

Once the tide is turned on the insurrection, and it links to supporters in the states, and you've cleaned up that mess, then they can go after Trump. The country will have a clearer idea of what happened, and why.

The trouble with a trial is getting an impartial jury. It only takes one sympathizer to spoil the justice.

For me personally, the sooner he is arrested, the better. But for the country? That’s tough to answer. George Conway had an interesting piece in the Washington Post recently outlining Trump’s various crimes and suggesting that Garland should appoint as many as three or four special prosecutors to investigate and prosecute Trump’s crimes, from the obstruction of justice documented in the Mueller report and the perjury he committed with his written answers, the Ukraine affair, campaign finance violations, and the attempted coup. It’s an interesting piece to read because Conway clearly laid out reasons for Trump to be prosecuted. Here’s the link.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/22/trump-charges-george-conway/?arc404=true

I think a lot depends on how the House impeachment managers frame their case. They need to provide the documentation for sedition, of course, but they also need to help the public understand how he manipulated his followers into believing his lies, which means they need to also present some facts to prove there was no election fraud and that Trump and his advisers (Roger Stone, Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, etc.) created a story and a big lie and then called his supporters to DC to attack the Capitol and overturn the election. Those supporters were acting on Trump’s call for them to act, and now many of them will spend years in jail because of his big lie. Those people need to see that it was Trump who misled them and called for their crimes. If that message could actually get to most Trump supporters, then I say prosecute him to the fullest extent possible and send him to jail. Then prosecute his enablers.

Rest assured though. Penalties for other crimes await Donnie. Things he couldn't separate himself from like a president often can.

Charge all those who demonstrated their sedition inside the Capitol on January 6, and then, confiscate all their guns and ammunition. Put them on the No-buy list.

Were his actions political in nature or criminal?

I would submit that they were not political at all but rather a pre-meditated and full-scale attempt to subvert and overthrow our government.

Had he succeeded, no court of law would have ever adjudicated his case, because he and his party meant to install him as leader forever. There would be no response, political or judicial, to such a scenario. We only need to remember the Mueller investigation, which was thwarted because of DOJ protections afforded a sitting president. Justice was only to be suspended until Trump left office. This was a grandiose effort to avoid that from happening. The entire Republican Party was involved in that conspiracy, and never ceased their illegal and anti-American transgressions.

Therefore, yes, the fact that the coup was unsuccessful and the co-conspirators continue to come to work every day in DC only makes the answer more confusing, but not less essential.

52. IMHO Trump should be charged & tried for the laws he broke.

We need to send a strong message that what he did is unacceptable & won't be tolerated.

That being said, I'm not an expert on Constitutional law. I do know that certain offenses have specific criteria that must be met, for example, 4 conditions, & if all 4 conditions are not met it doesn't qualify as that particular crime. If what Trump did does not meet the legal/Constitutional definition of sedition, if all required conditions/acts are not present, then no, we shouldn't charge him with it because it would be a futile exercise that will only make us look incompetent.

But if legal experts examine the facts & believe his actions qualify, & a good case can be made, then by all means we should proceed & prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.

If we go after him directly with criminal charges, it would embolden his followers. However, I think his trial in the Senate and banning him from ever running for office again would humiliate him which is a punishment all on its own for a narcissist like Donald.

Now, New York is going after him, his family, and his businesses for fraud and tax fraud. He has hundreds of millions of dollars in notes coming due within the next few years, and creditors, who have now cut him off, are calling them in. American bankruptcy isn't going to help him internationally. He's going to be facing foreclosure and losing most if not all of his properties. The Trump brand is in disgrace, and it will never come back. He will be destitute within the next few years which is a fate worse than prison. Jared's daddy showed that you can come back from prison, but you still can't come back from the appearance of poverty.

However, the older 3 Trump children and Jared should definitely be prosecuted to the fullest. It would hurt Donald more to see Ivanka behind bars than it would to be behind bars himself. He would just rage if it were him behind bars; watching Ivanka go to jail would go with a feeling of helplessness which would torture him. It would mean Daddy is powerless to save his precious little princess. (If I were Tiffany, I would start using my mother's last name.)

To ensure that Donnie stays a good boy and doesn't start plotting and inciting further violence, he needs a FISA warrant slapped on him, so we can keep an eye on him.

What concerns me even more are the ones who are still in our government. There are 147 House members and 13 Senators who need to be expelled from Congress. Those that participated in the insurrection by giving tours, directions, tweeting locations, etc. should aggressively be prosecuted. Then we need to scrub all other federal agencies and the military from insurrectionists.

There can be no unity without accountability. Period.

Given that, I find that I agree with Colin Powell that Michael Flynn should be recalled to active duty and court martialed. Plus, a big part of his broken plea agreement was that his son wouldn't be prosecuted. Well, since that's out the window, Flynn's son should summarily be arrested and prosecuted for the crimes he committed with his father. Michael can watch his son go down with him.

The other criminals Trump pardoned should be investigated for further crimes and prosecuted to the fullest.

Kellyanne Conway needs to be charged and prosecuted for her blatant violations of the Hatch Act. Most who violate the Hatch Act do so once and are then dismissed. Kellyanne did it repeatedly and flagrantly. She even mentioned the Hatch Act to flaunt it. A fine isn't enough. She needs to do jail time as an example to future advisers, spokespeople, and surrogates.

I think this would be a start. We also need to clean up state governments. For a decade now, the FBI has been warning about local law enforcement being infiltrated by white supremacists. Is it any wonder that we have the issues with law enforcement that we do? Not at all. Was I surprised that fire fighters and cops participated in that insurrection? Not in the least. All levels of law enforcement must be scrubbed. Major reforms need to immediately be implemented.

Again, there can be no unity without accountability.

Based on the testimony of Michael Cohen and the evidence he offered Congress, the RNC has been taking foreign donations. The GOP must also be investigated. Ultimately, those in the party of traitors need to get over themselves and take some responsibility for what they have wrought over the last 40 years that culminated in the rise of authoritarianism, lawlessness, and insurrection.

No accountability. No Unity.

57. Yes. The progression of events leading to the insurrection at the Capitol

shows a conspiracy to incite insurrection, instigated by Trump.

Beginning with the instances of innuendo that he put forth about serving more than two terms, to his long pre-election insistence that if he lost, it would be due to election fraud, to the progression of ludicrous lawsuits brought forth between the election and the insurrection, to his telling his worshipers to go to the Capitol and fight for him.

Totally premeditated from the very beginning of his first term. Trump is a cult leader who knew he was in complete control of the minds of his worshipers, and he knowingly and deliberately misinformed and misled them in order to use them for his purpose of overturning the election by any means possible, in order for him to remain in the White House.

Some of his worshipers themselves have stated that they sacked the Capitol under his direction. He set the insurrection up from beginning to end as a fail safe mechanism in the event that he lost the election.

Trump is a narcissistic sociopath. He did everything he possibly could to try to remain in power, including conspiring to incite, and inciting an insurrection in order to remain in the White House. He had absolutely no remorse for deliberately lying to the world in order to make his worshipers believe the election was stolen, and that they had to fight like hell for him and use any means to illegally install him as an illegitimate dictator. And they did. He has no remorse whatsoever over those who were killed because of his actions, and no remorse over the deceived, deluded saps who believed his lies and were driven by him into a becoming a violent, enraged mob that attacked the Capitol and were intent on harming and even murdering Congress members. He has no remorse that many of these deranged worshipers of his are going to prison and having their lives ripped apart because of his actions.

Charles Manson never killed anyone. He gained control of the minds of his followers, and knowingly and deliberately used them to commit murder, for his own purposes. Trump's control of the minds of his worshipers allowed him to knowingly and deliberately use them to attack the Capitol for his own purposes.

Trump is a dangerous criminal, and must be arrested prosecuted just like any other dangerous criminal who has committed crimes and remains at large. A competent prosecution team should be able to present evidence necessary to convict him.

He committed sedition and insurrection on TV and on Twit. Trump is an insurrectionist and should spend the rest of his days in prison. At the very least.
