Mary Trump, the niece of Former President Donald Trump, has said she might change her last name to avoid being associated with her uncle.
"I am prepared to change my name if need be," she told The Telegraph. She is worried her last name now comes with negative connotations, the clinical psychologist said.
Trump's niece has long sought to distance herself from the former president by publicly criticizing him.
She has previously accused him of being a "narcissist," "a sociopath," and has backed calls for his impeachment.

(3,389 posts)I can't imagine -- or maybe I can -- how toxic it must be to share a last name with that slime mold.

(82,383 posts)those with the name ended up in the US. At some point they changed the name. They also vowed not to have children, so that his line would go out - though actually it's just through his brother. He has no direct descendants.

(16,616 posts)IMO, she's done a wonderful job of distinguishing herself from the other Trumps, and also redeeming her father's memory by telling his painful story and explaining Fred Jr.'s struggle to differentiate and make an independent life for himself, and how it contributed to his death. If she decided to keep her name, it could be a way of honoring her father's memory, I would think.
She could also take her spouse's last name.
Many of the children of Nazi war criminals kept their names. But I found one who did not: the son of Josef Mengele.

There are likely others who changed their names as well, but that's all I could find in a quick Google search.

(6,251 posts)Mary has married and since divorced, so the option to take her wife's name is probably off the table. In the book, she never names her former wife.

(16,616 posts)Thanks for the information.
I remember from the book that the wedding in Hawaii had to be postponed, and that no Trumps ever asked her about her relationship, or really anything about her life, but I didn't remember that they were divorced. Sad.

(32,084 posts)Nothing wrong with that name, in spite of what her grandfather, or whoever the hell it was who changed it, thought. All the more reason to change it back, actually.
