(6,008 posts)... are not about trying to understand what they are thinking or whether we can come to common ground. These are not questions one should ask about delusional people. The questions responsible news media should be asking are: How can we deprogram the deluded cult members that can be saved from their lunacy, and how do we minimize the harm that those who cannot be saved can do.

(15,212 posts)On occasion I might actually enjoy the challenge of arguing with one of these nutcases, but not time and time again with the same one, and it's hard to imagine feeling friendly after all of that.

(13,180 posts)In rhetoric, if I recall correctly, you have to persuade people. But the very first message you need to get across is that you respect the audience and have their best interest in mind as your primary goal. You can't sell even 2+2=4 if you don't show it's going to make your audience more content, more enlivened, more moved.
Our story has to be a lot more than 2+2=4. Facts are just "the inch that won't be given" if the real story is about struggle for lifestyle, a far less tractable subject, but the actual subject.

(3,384 posts)People that think it is flat need to be educated. They can believe what they want, but we cant be ruled by opinions. We need to be ruled by facts and reality.

(5,018 posts)that Fox and OAN are outright lying to these people is part of the problem. I can find common ground with traditional conservatives. I can't find common ground with people who have been brainwashed into a cult by greedy, selfish, fascist, evil f**ks who don't care one bit about them.

(14,529 posts)15 years ago it was mostly the theory of evolution that was under attack. And some comic (probably Bill Maher) said, "What's next? Gravity?"
Fast fwd 15 years and now it is this flat earth thing. And that is probably the tip of the iceberg wrt drivel spread via FB, youtube etc.
