Whenever you hear any talk of the importance of character or "protecting the integrity of the game" cited as criteria for election to the Hall of Fame, you have express permission involuntarily snort, spit, laugh, shake your head (or all of the above) in the face of the speaker of those words. Racist, homophobic, crooked piece of shit Curt Schilling is about to be voted into the Hall of Fame. None of those things matter. Schilling has quite a record outside of baseball. Defrauding the taxpayers of Rhode Island? Check. Consipriacy theorist? Check. Racist? Check. Homophobe? Check. Calling for the lynching of journalists? Check (for a bonus he's called them scumbags and the worst people on Earth) Add his recent devotion to denying that the election results were legit. Somewhere, Ty Cobb is rooting for Schilling to challenge him for the designation of the worst person in the Hall of Fame.
By the time he first appeared on a ballot in 2013, Schilling was embroiled in a massive lawsuit with the state of Rhode Island after a scandal involving misuse and default on a $75 million loan granted by the state to a gaming company fronted by Schilling. At the time, it appeared hed have significant difficulty overcoming the Halls infamous character clause. Already unpopular with the press after years of feuding with teammates, executives, and media members alike, he garnered just 39% of the vote on his first go-around, falling to 29% the next year.
Since then, however, the Schilling vote has steadily increased, culminating in his 70% share in last years election. This is despite the increasingly problematicto be generousnature of his behavior since his first ballot. Already known for his fringe views, Schilling first flared back into the spotlight in 2014, when then-ESPN prospect analyst Keith Law was suspended from the network following a Twitter exchange with Schilling in which the latter repeatedly denied evolution.
The following year, Schilling himself was suspended from broadcast duties (in the midst of calling the Little League World Series, no less) when he shared memes and an incoherent diatribe likening Muslims to Nazis. He was finally fired from the network in 2016 after sharing more hateful posts targeting trans and other LGBTQ+ communities.
Thats only the beginning. Since then, Schilling has fully embraced his alt-right persona. Some of the more notable ways in which hes used his sizable platform include sharing tweets and Facebook posts advocating for the lynching of journalists, agreeing with and promoting white supremacists on his Breitbart radio show, peddling QAnon takes, and generally spending his days regurgitating racist tropes and abuse across his social media accounts. As of yesterday, he still thinks the election was rigged and/or stolen. Make of that what you will.

(9,268 posts)Every five days hes a real horse on the mound. The other four days hes just a horses ass.
Fregosi was the Phillies manager during Schillings time with us, when he was a huge factor in beating the Braves for the Pennant.

(11,030 posts)He refused to talk to any press because they were too critical. And I don't remember him being such a political jackass back then, he was just a pampered asshole.

(52,163 posts)Rose should be in for his playing days, Cobb who was a racist to the core is in, I am sure that many other horrid people are in there who I don't know about.

(4,200 posts)That Cobb wasn't as bad as made out to be, that the writer of the first bio of him had it in for him. I've read a little more about it online and the consensus seems mixed.
Rose should absolutely be in.
And to mix the two players, there's a baseball in my family that my great Uncle had signed by the 1928 Philadelphia Athletics, one of whom was Ty Cobb. In the mid 80s I had seats right by the visitor's dugout in the Astrodome for a Reds game and wanted to get Rose to sign it as well, but was told "Mr Rose does not sign autographs".

(82,849 posts)It's a wholly-owned creation of the Baseball Writers Association of America, a closed guild. Players, managers, and executives who suck up to the media and the writers get consideration. Those who just play the game and give writers the cold shoulder don't. The Baseball Hall of Fame isn't for the fans, it's for the writers.

(82,849 posts)Certainly any list of great ballplayers is going to include and exclude some controversial names, but for me it's important to keep in mind that the Baseball Hall of Fame membership is the sole province of the BBWAA.

(15,440 posts)Shoeless Joe Jackson does as well, but at least in his case I can understand why he's not there.

(422 posts)His story reminds of Bill Russell who was a featured player around the same era.
FYI: There is an article about him in the NY Times (hope you are able to read it). It says he can still get into the Hall in the future.

Honestly, I don't see why Mike Mussina got in either.
