General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAn honest question. Re: The Rolex, etc.
As you may be aware, I'm kinda' stupid, so please indulge me here.
1) Why WOULDN'T The President of the United States of America wear a Rolex?
2) What's the deal with the tan suit? What's wrong with a tan suit?
I swear, these people who find these things to chew on...I honestly don't get it. President Obama's tan suit has been talked about forever, and I have not understood this issue since day one. He could wear a hot pink suit for all I care. I probably wouldn't even notice.
See, the one thing I've noticed about Republicans...In general, they focus on trivial things that other people have or don't have. Now, why exactly is that?
I've never understood this mindset. Never will either.

(26,081 posts)Probably 15K worth of watches he bought over 20 years. I would never spend that on watches, but I have spent more than that on my nerd hobby stuff over teh years. I don't go out drinking, I buy low-cost cars, and I'm not a clotheshorse, so I spend money on that stuff. I ahve a good job, pay bills, and so does my BIL.
I also didn;t care Oprah had a 5K purse. It was her money. She earned it.
I don't even care that Trump had a 36K Rolex.

(8,445 posts)I wish, after they made their big deal out of a perfectly fine tan suit, he had worn something like the hot pink suit you mentioned.
That man could pull off anything as far as clothes go.
Did they ever mention the orange-ness of their guy? Or the reptilian look of his third wife?
Yes, President Biden's Rolex is fine with me. I'm sure it cost less that ONE golf outing that trump took on our dime.

I thought he looked super sharp in the tan suit...
Trump, on the other hand...

(9,894 posts)that tan suit. It worked on him better than on a white guy, he looked good in clothes, it was slightly different than we were used to seeing... I wish he had worn it again.

(17,444 posts)Back when I used to wear suits, I had several tan suits, and I always was complimented on them. I'm a white guy of Italian descent, so my skin is on the darker side. As I'm thinking about it now, a tan suit might not look so good on a really pale white guy.
I've come across a few articles, etc. that tell you the colors you should wear depending on your skin tone...

this is not a recent phenomenon. they went on and on about carter's sweaters and gore's earth tones and dukakis's helmet.
of course, their fixation on triviality is completely one-sided. no republican ever has worn the wrong attire or looked funny, if you ask any republican.
the real crime is not so much that republicans lob schoolyard insults. the real crime is that the media promotes and encourages and rewards that sort of thing. *they* are the ones who deem it worthy of serious consideration.

FWIW I love rolex watches and President Biden has some really good watches in his collection, including his "everyman" Seiko quartz and an Omega.
I'll even admit that Trump's vacheron constantin watch is pretty impressive and way more expensive than a rolex.
Celerity
(43,420 posts)Completely depends on the models. There are many Rolex models that dwarf many Vacheron Constantin models in price.

FIFTYSIX SELF-WINDING
40 mm , Stainless steel
With a retro-contemporary style, this watch is inspired by a model dating back to 1956 reference 6073. The sector dial and petrol blue strap contrast elegantly with the steel case. Its openworked caseback reveals an elevated oscillating weight in 22K gold, inspired by the Maltese cross, as well as the exceptional finish of the automatic movement.

(866 posts)He is so tall and thin, he wears a suit so well, like a male model. Dr. Biden also wears clothes well. I, myself, fit more in the Bernie category. Im certain Jill got him the Rolex because it makes the outfit. I appreciated the effort. Joe Biden looks presidential and it was so important on Inauguration Day.
LuckyCharms
(17,444 posts)And don't get me started on Dr. Biden. She is one fine looking woman, and a lot of her beauty comes from the inside. Same with Mrs. Obama. Melania, who is supposed to be so beautiful, never did a thing for me. No inner beauty at all. She makes me cringe. That squint...

(11,740 posts)Republicans exist on grievance. They break government, then decry how "broken" government is. They indulge in extramarital affairs, forced abortion, etc... and decry how "liberal" moral failings are tearing apart the fabric of society. It is all show and strategy.
A Rolex is a rich man's watch and for them, the idea of a Democratic President being a rich man and wearing a rich man's watch is just a tool with which to attack "liberal hypocrisy". Only thing is, liberal are not against the rich. We tend to be against excessive greed, which affords a person 3 private planes and 2 yachts while a thousand people sleep on the street with no food. One man (Biden) and his highly educated and well employed wife, enjoying the freedom to buy a pricey watch, is not that level of excess. Would I buy a Rolex, even if I could afford it? No. That is my choice. I don't judge people who do. I judge people when they put money over people, which is the goal of the Republican Party (at least putting Monied People over other people).
The Tan Suit was also not the problem, it was the person in the Tan Suit that was the problem. The Republicans could not just come out and say, "there's a ni$$er in the White House!" so they had to criticize everything from his Tan Suit to putting his feet on the Resolute Desk (which were BOTH done by other Presidents, with one glaring difference). Republicans despite what some of the newer idiot spokesboys like Shapiro say about "facts over feelings" are ALL ABOUT EMOTION. They use symbolism and emotion to arouse their smaller membership (words chosen deliberately). They are easily excitable, especially when they think that some other group is getting some benefit they don't deserve.
I am sure that you don't understand the mindset because as a (and I am making an assumption so, sorry) liberal, you have it in you and were taught to consider the experiences of other people, even if you don't know them. We as liberals typically accept that while people have different abilities and some people are bigger, stronger, smarter, more artistic, etc... than others; we all have the same dignity and value. While we can be as angry and spiteful as conservatives, it is usually when we hear about powerful people oppressing vulnerable people, not when we hear about powerful people using that power to help other. That is what conservatives hate.
Joe Biden and Barack Obama were not born rich. They obtained their wealth through work and luck, which is what has been sold to us as the American Dream, but they have also, in the eyes of Republicans/Conservatives committed the mortal sin of trying to use the power of government, to actually make life better for the non-wealthy. This "distortion" of the natural order is scary and upsetting to conservatives so they have to try to destroy the character of people who attempt it. Just like George W Bush's grandfather Prescott, helped to organize the Business Coup against FDR who dared use the power of government to stop the ravages of the Great Depression, these modern conservatives go after any liberal who would do the same.

These people have worked their entire lives. Why wouldn't they have enough money to buy a Peloton? Put a downpayment on a vacation home?
I understand that the U.S. is filled with people who have to count every dime, just barely get by, and can't imagine someone spending $1000 dollars on a stationary bike, or a Rolex (admittedly I think it's foolish to spend that much money on a watch, but it's none of my damned business). I don't think it's fair that so many Americans who work so hard struggle like that, but when you compare that kind of money we are talking about here to the really offensive money that is usually discussed when we talk about income inequality, we are talking about a laughably small amount of money, the kind of money Sheldon Adelson or the Mercers casually drop to throw a summer party.
