Alan Dershowitz Tells Newsmax Trump Impeachment Conviction Would Taint 2024 Election: People Will Not Accept Results
By Tommy Christopher Jan 26th, 2021, 11:21 am
Harvard Law professor emeritus and celebrity attorney Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax viewers that if ex-President Donald Trump is convicted at his impeachment trial and banned from running again, the 2024 election will be tainted as a result.
During an episode of former Trump White House Press Secretary Sean Spicers Spicer & Co. show, Dershowitz offered a dire warning that convicting Trump and banishing him from seeking federal office would set a bad precedent.
This is a total mess, and whats going to happen is, if in the event the president, former president Trump, is convicted and is disqualified, this will raise questions about the legitimacy of the 2024 election, Dershowitz said.
People will not accept an election where a group of Democratic senators, with a few Republicans, have denied the American public the right to vote for a candidate who they may want to see as president of the United States, he continued.

(11,740 posts)I am sure that a lot of people would have liked to see a third and even fourth term of President Obama ala FDR. The American people were denied that choice too.
People like Dershowitz follow the old adage that has been attributed to many and phrased in many ways, "If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell"
There have been people impeached who have been barred from holding political office before. Yes, there has not been a president who has been barred from holding office, mainly because there have only been 3 presidents in 250 years who have been impeached and none was ever convicted in the Senate. Had Nixon not resigned, he'd of likely been the first President to have been removed given the evidence and the political winds at the time.
The reality is that the country is divided and the reason that people like Dershowitz are saying that a conviction and barring from political office will widen the rift, is because people like Dershowitz, Carlson, Hannity, and many in the Republican Party, will do everything in their power to exploit this situation to "widen the rift". They are like arsonists who set the fire stand back and say, "Oh my god, the house is on fire!! Why is the house on fire?" Because you set the fire, assholes!!

"...denied the American public the right to vote"--this is what 7 Senators and 143 Congressmen tried to do after their voter suppression tactics failed.
vs.
"...denied the American public the right o vote for a candidate they may want to see as president...."
Um. Um. Well. Isn't that what primaries do? Winnow out candidates people might want to see become president? Harris was my #1. Warren my #2. I did vote in primaries, and my candidates lost.
Why are the attorneys involved in this Big Lie not sanctioned and disbarred? WHy are they not responsible for wasting the court's time?

(19,069 posts)75% of the GOP already thinks a fantasy that the election wasn't free and fair, who cares if they keep thinking that? I don't, these people are beyond reach, if they think Trump not being allowed to run is a big problem, fuck em. They can stop voting.

(32,086 posts)His pathetic attempts at trying to fear-monger Dems is laughable. Especially in light of the fact that this whole impeachment is because HIS Dear Leader tried to deny the votes of tens of millions of Americans. Go fuck yourself, Alan.

(1,990 posts)Almost every person still going to bat for Trump likely has some skeletons in their closet that Trump has the goods on.
Here goes Dersh making no sense again. "The people" will not accept not being able to vote for Donald Trump in 2024.... even though "The People" have overwhelmingly voted against the man in two straight elections? Lets take another angle..... there are 350 million some odd people in America..... and if one single person can't be President.. then its Viva Revolution? If a reality show con man can't run for President in 2024 after losing by 2.5 million and 7 million votes, then the 2024 election wouldn't be legitimate?
Then he goes on to note that it would take a Bipartisan group of Senators to even get here.
There are no words to describe this stupidity.

(16,254 posts)He should be telling Trump and his followers that no matter how much "they" wanted Trump to win, he didn't. Just because he's a sore loser, as are they, no one is going to give either of them the win. Whine and cry all you want.
Trump should have thought about the 2024 election before he threw his temper tantrum and called in his dogs. Truth be known, he only wanted "the win" to keep the SDNY tiger from his door. She terrifies him.
I'm convinced our brains are wired differently. Thank God for small favors.

Dershowitz thinks he is clever, but hes a fool playing with matches.
The American people had to put up with a corrupt incompetent who lost the popular vote twice in 20 years. I have zero patience for what the minority party has to say about what theyll accept.

(19,204 posts)should seriously consider sending Dershowitz out to pasture. Either that or trade him to Yale for two future draft picks.

(65,078 posts)The people just had a choice of who they wanted for president and one guy lost by 7 million votes.
This is an amazingly illogical argument cemented by events just 12 weeks ago.
