What McConnell got -- and didn't -- on the filibuster
The new 50-50 Senate is set to proceed under a power-sharing agreement after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday night dropped his demand that the agreement require that the filibuster be maintained for the next two years.
To hear some people tell it, hes backing down without having gotten much in return. To hear McConnells team tell it, he won by gaining other assurances about the longevity of the filibuster and its 60-vote threshold for most legislation.
The truth is decidedly somewhere in between, though, and its unlikely all of this changed too much.
One thing we knew: The votes werent there to get rid of the filibuster right now. Democrats would need to vote in lockstep to abolish it, and several members have either said they wouldnt support doing so or have reservations.
