https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-race-and-ethnicity-prisons-coronavirus-pandemic-c8c246f00695f37ef2afb1dd3a5f115ePresident Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered the Department of Justice to end its reliance on private prisons and acknowledge the central role government has played in implementing discriminatory housing policies.
In remarks before signing the order, Biden said the U.S. government needs to change its whole approach on the issue of racial equity. He added that the nation is less prosperous and secure because of the scourge of systemic racism.
We must change now, the president said. I know its going to take time, but I know we can do it. And I firmly believe the nation is ready to change. But government has to change as well.
Biden rose to the presidency during a year of intense reckoning on institutional racism in the U.S. The moves announced on Tuesday reflect his efforts to follow through with campaign pledges to combat racial injustice.

(22,359 posts)The DOJ contracts with private prisons to incarcerate people. (Other agencies -- such as Homeland Security -- do as well, and this order does not affect them.) These people will now be moved to state-run prisons. No one will be freed because of this.

(7,754 posts)accountability than state or federally run prisons. The end game for private prisons is profit, not rehabilitation.

(7,263 posts)They give a fuck about prisoner rights. They need more non-violent offenders in prison.
For example, private prisons provide help desk analysts for a lot of companies.
The analysts make peanuts compared to their non incarcerated brethren.
It is all about $$$$, not punishment or rehabilitation.

(22,359 posts)jobs and votes for underserved areas, and buying/selling services such as communications and food. As with private prisons, it's all about the money, not rehabilitation.

(7,263 posts)Different motivation.
Reforms can be made since We can fire the crooks running them.
Much harder to control stinking corrupt Private Prison Corporations who ONLY care about $$$$.
Sorry, you will never convince me Private FOR PROFIT prisons are a good thing.
They are pure Jim Crow and promote systemic racism in the name of the almighty $.
WhiskeyGrinder
(22,359 posts)that about 10 percent of incarcerated people are in private prisons, that all prisons promote systemic racism in the name of the almighty dollar, and that the system cannot be reformed.

(22,359 posts)All prisons are houses of trauma, and states profit off the ones they run.

(10,849 posts)When my GF did 2 years in Fla first she was in the state run prison outside Ocala and it was a medieval nightmare, when she was transferred to the private one in Quincy outside Tallahassee she was SO happy, it was so much nicer and better run and modern, it looked like a college campus when I visited her.

(14,007 posts)But *most* private prisons are even worse. There's a reason most Democrats want to do away with them.
