🚨 This evening, Sen Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well. He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician. Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is...

(6,890 posts)to replace a Senator or Representative with other than a replacement of the same party? Some states don't. Some states don't give the power to the governor at all but to the state chair of the party of the person being replaced.
Of course in the case of an independent, that would be moot. But what he has said he would do would be in accordance with that, I suppose.

(497 posts)I was watching Dianne Feinstein while proceedings were happening in the senate and I doubt if she knew what was happening. After that incident of hugging Lindsay Graham after confirming their latest supreme court justice, I often wonder if she's in need of retirement.
ageism is not a good thing... yes, some older Senators and Representatives should quit (or eased out) but age shouldn't be a factor... lots of wise elders and lots of doofus youngsters
I agree. Ageism seems to be the last acceptable ism. Everyone ages differently and some are doing better at an advanced age than those much younger. If someone is ineffective, no matter what their age, then its understandable that they face a challenge in the primary.

(43,420 posts)I cannot see here running again (despite her filing) and if she does, she will be defeated. I voted for Kevin de León in both the primary and the general (we have a jungle primary in CA, which often results in 2 Dems in the general) and was not happy he lost.
Feinstein (and I knew these things, it was why I was against her even more) is also the 3rd (she just has gone under the radar lately in terms of press focus) Senator who is totally against doing away with the filibuster, and is also completely against SCOTUS expansion. There are likely other Democratic Senators as well with these stances, definitely multiple ones against SCOTUS expansion.

CA is a huge, important state that is considered 6th(?) largest economy in the world. My home state deserves better representation. Porter would be an amazing appointment.

(4,439 posts)up to her mid to late 90's. My mom had a better memory than me. She died almost 2 years ago now. She voted every election and she loved Biden. She would be thrilled to know he is now President. However, once her memory started to go, she went downhill quickly. Sometimes, no matter what age you are, if you're not up to par you have to admit it and leave the job to someone more capable. Feinstein needs to do just that.

(43,420 posts)He and Kamala Harris had basically the same stances on most things when he ran for Senate, and then when she ran for POTUS.
I voted for him in the primary and in the general. I was not happy with the outcome (as I knew in 2018 Feinstein was against both ending the filibuster and SCOTUS expansion, as well as some other issues I disagree with her on). I am a longwave thinker and voter, I look out beyond the next year or 2 beyond election years.
In the general he got almost 46% despite being out fundraised by almost 20 MILLION USD
Feinstein defeated De León 54.2% to 45.8% in the general, and he broke the record for most votes by a losing US Senate candidate and became the first person to get 5 million votes in a US Senate election and lose.

(47,512 posts)We are watching a 78 year old president who is blowing me away. Dr. Fauci is a very young and sharp 80 year old.
I agree Dianne Feinstein seems to have lost her edge, but that is not true of everyone.

(47,512 posts)She's 80 as well. 80 certainly isn't what it used to be.
I feel badly about Diane Feinstein. She is a remarkable woman with an extraordinary story, but this past year she definitely has not been herself. I hope she chooses to step down on her own. I would like to see her leave with some dignity. If she keeps defending Trumpist republicans who have questioned the legitimacy of the election, her legacy could be seriously tarnished.

(37,748 posts)That said, predicating a change to the constitution wholly on over-the-internet diagnoses of two examples seems to lack any real rational or critical thought.
However, if you can support your premise with objective and/or peer-reviewed data, I'd be amenable to reading the appropriate journals or dissertations.
People can vote for someone else.

It is the senior member of the majority party, then it starts through Cabinet members, with Sec of State first in like.
MyMission
(1,850 posts)I thought it went by absolute seniority, not party seniority.
So Diane Feinstein is next in seniority. Then Patty Murray, then Ron Wyden
Meanwhile, most recent reports are saying it was an abundance of caution that sent Leahy to the hospital, so hopefully he'll be feeling better and ready to go. Apparently he's been doing a lot of prep work for this.
