Fun fact: North/South Dakota are only 2 states because Republicans wanted more Senators.

Fun fact: North/South Dakota are only 2 states because Republicans wanted more Senators. ND even says this on their *government* website:

https://ndstudies.gov/gr4/early-settlement-north-dakota/section-6-statehood

"the Republican Party, which wanted more power in the U.S. Senate, put on pressure to divide Dakota into two states"

Bill Mahar asks the question about why there are two Dakota's frequently.

In 1880, when this happened, the Democratic Party was the party of the Lost Cause, the party that invented Jim Crow. The Republicans were the Party of Lincoln. This kind of historical illiteracy evolves into cultural illiteracy which includes governmental illiteracy. Then you get MAGA. American history is not simple. This isn't the "gotcha" it appears at first reading.

They were way better on civil rights but even back then they supported big business, wealthy people, robber barons, etc.

In 1889, SD territory had 340,000 people, per the article. 132 years later, they have 884k. About 2.6 fold of what they had in 1889.
The US went from 62 million in 1889, to 330 million. 5.3 fold.
So, SD has grown at only half the rate as the country as a whole!
I never would have guessed it was that disparate.
