I used to believe that Republicans only cared if something bad happened to them.

Now, they were under attack in their place of work in the Capitol and they don't even feel the need to punish the person who started the riot. Are they so damn afraid of what he can still do to them they will not even vote to limit his future threats???

Well, Steve Scalise was seriously injured by a person with a gun he should have been in favor of a little more gun control...but NO.

Do they really think that the person who told those people to go to the Capitol and act out, cared for a moment if any of them were harmed.?

It has to do with their image. Removing a Republican president - even Trump - simply does not fit their worldview. They live and die by the appearance of solidarity (let's call it what it is -- lockstep) and convicting Trump would blow a hole in their wall. It's all about protecting the brand, and with that, their political careers.

We try to read more into in on multiple levels, but I'm not sure it's anything deeper than that. It's pure self-interest.

If a democratic president somehow did unconscionable crap like Donnie did, democrats would be falling over themselves to run away from that president and they would impeach and remove him in a heartbeat.

Out of self-interest. But that's because democratic self-interest lies in integrity and principle, whereas Republican self-interest lies in blind loyalty no matter how evil or corrupt or inept or disastrous or even lethal it may be.

Liberals tend to believe in a level of equality with regards to human dignity and rights. We also believe in government by consent of the governed. While liberals can be susceptible to desiring power, and to corruption, you are right, when there is an egregious situation that calls into question the integrity, trust, and worthiness of a Democratic politician, we will demand justice no matter what.

Conservatives do not believe in any of that, at their core. They may say they do, but they don't. Conservative thought was shaped by political philosophers who were defenders of monarchy and the idea of a natural, god granted, hierarchy to society. People are fundamentally unequal in conservative thought, and the "great" need to rule over the "lesser". When the Monarchs began to fall, conservatives did not just say, "Oh, guess we were wrong, people are equal and democracy is the way". They simply said that the Monarchs were "not the right kind of great people who should lead" and they focused their energy on promoting the new "great" people, wealthy merchants. Of course those wealthy merchants had to be White, Christian men. Hundreds of years later, this conservative philosophy is still at is core, about ruling, not governing, and about preserving the "natural order" of things. This is why Republicans can be so blindly loyal, because what matters to them is POWER, regardless of how they achieve it, and regardless of what they must do to maintain it. To them, democracy is just another platitude that they can use to rile people up, but something they will discard in a heartbeat if it interferes with their power.

A handful of them are probably jonesing for the VP slot. Trump has a uniquely loyal cult following and is able to increase voter enthusiasm more than anyone else on their side could. So I believe they are now making a new deal with the devil, knowing full well what it entails. With new voter suppression laws being cooked up in the all important swing states, they will have a pretty decent shot, too.

He permanently lost a chunk of support for the Jan 6th insurrection. Plus, four years is a long time for someone not in power, not getting media attention, etc. to keep a huge fan base. If with voter suppression, he doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning. He’ll have his 33% cult and that’s all.

Trump won't get involved in a new party unless it punishes the GOP, and the rest of the nation.

He claims to want a "Patriot Party". but I see that as a grift. He'll bleed the magaheads dry by selling them
hats and t-shirts and false hope.
