Democrats look to quickly move past Trump trial

Politico

Even before Donald Trump’s impeachment trial begins, some Senate Democrats are getting ready to speed to the end.

After only five Republican senators joined Democrats in a vote Tuesday essentially declaring that Trump’s trial was constitutional, some in the new majority are signaling they’d like to quickly focus their attention elsewhere. If it wasn’t obvious before, they say, it’s now clear the GOP isn’t going to convict Trump.

“ To do a trial knowing you'll get 55 votes at the max seems to me to be not the right prioritization of our time,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) told reporters Wednesday. “Obviously we do a trial, maybe we can do it fast, but my top priority is Covid relief and getting the Biden Cabinet approved.”

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), a member of Democratic leadership, agreed: “It is really a judgment call about whether or not people think that his inciting an insurrection and essentially an attack on our democracy warrants conviction.”

Election was fair, not stolen, that Trump and company were liars who didn't care about democracy, that Trump started his assault on democracy way before the insurrection, that he's always been willing to advocate for violence if he doesn't get his way, that he has no respect for citizens or voters who don't support him, that he had personal reasons for needing to stay in office, and we need to know what his changes in top officials had to do with help not coming for the Capitol police.

There is no judgment call.? There’s video. Social media. What has happened to some peoples’ backbone? Don’t have the votes? Put it in record. Get a backbone or go home.

We need to flush all the facts about the insurrection. If you don't do your jobs and prove what we already know then they will try try try again. You might not be so lucky next time.

Just sayin. We have them squirming, especially your colleagues.

No accountability for those in the positions of power who stoked the flames that lead to that tragedy? We don't have the votes so let's just move on as quickly as possible and act like nothing happened?

If that's the case, then it seems we've already lost. It will only be a matter of time before another authoritarian comes onto the scene who is more capable and more convincing than Trump. There can be no unity without accountability. No peace without justice.

I am all for working to pass Biden's agenda, but, pardon my pessimism, are we to believe Republicans will act in good faith and not block every move towards progress? They won't even agree to appoint cabinet positions they view as "controversial"!!

Doesn't have to be every single appointment but just top person at the cabinet.

And things are coming out everyday about the terrorist attack so that can be used in the trial.

The headline is misleading.

And I have noticed a lot of this crap in the press since Joe started stepping on corporate toes by bringing back sensible regulation.

make sure all the evidence, with witnesses, is presented. Make it a precursor to his criminal trial. More people will see this trial than the criminal trial.
