Paul Krugman: The Republican Party is stuck, probably irreversibly, in a doom loop of bizarro.

Here’s what we know about American politics: The Republican Party is stuck, probably irreversibly, in a doom loop of bizarro. If the Trump-incited Capitol insurrection didn’t snap the party back to sanity — and it didn’t — nothing will.

...On Tuesday Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, who has said that Donald Trump’s role in fomenting the insurrection was impeachable, voted for a measure that would have declared a Trump trial unconstitutional because he’s no longer in office. (Most constitutional scholars disagree.)

On Thursday Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader — who still hasn’t conceded that Joe Biden legitimately won the presidency, but did declare that Trump “bears responsibility” for the attack on Congress — visited Mar-a-Lago, presumably to make amends.

In other words, the G.O.P.’s national leadership, after briefly flirting with sense, has surrendered to the fantasies of the fringe. Cowardice rules

The NYTimes is Krugman’s opinion piece, unfortunately behind a paywall. DailyKos is an article discussing and quoting from the NYT piece.

The Republican Party is coming to grips with the fact that they have to go full crazy to continue to exist. They're undoubtedly 90% there though. Trump owns that party, that is 100% clear. You're not going to have people like Boebert, Greene, and Gaetz trending towards behaving like Mitt Romney, in fact, the opposite will happen. Mitt will be purged, but other non crazy Republicans will start parroting the Greene/Boebert talking points.

People think that spells doom for them, it doesn't. They're going to go full wingnut and try to seize power by force.

Biden delivering for the American people is the best tool to thwart the crazy.

Secondly the military made it abundantly clear they have no role in this kind of nonsense. Without the military, they are doomed to fail again

The Republican Party sheds supporters every year and it picked up speed after the Capitol insurrection as evidenced by the fact that thousands of registered Republicans nationwide are changing to Dems or to nothing at all.

Laws mean nothing to them.

Order means nothing to them.

I guess the 1% figures this is the time to spend their dark money and give it a try.

If we could cut off their pipeline to $$ they will fail. But Citizen's United has put them in a good spot...

Personally I believe they are pulling the trigger too soon, just like Adolph did in 1939. It gives The People a chance. If they had dumped trump and pretended to put down the extremists, and tried a coup in 2028 I think they would have much greater odds of success, not that it ain't serious now.

But greed and power lust make one impatient and stupid in a lot of ways.

Here's hoping that watching them scurry crazily about in the full light of day now makes the difference in independent voters minds.

9. Republicans Have Shown For Year That They Don't Know How To Govern

With the singular exception of Mitt Romney. But nobody listens to him any more.

It wasn't anything that Trump said that brought McCarthy back in the fold. It is the Republican oligarchs that told McCarthy to head hat in hand to Florida to meet with Trump. They also told Trump to knock off the Patriot Party talk. Both politicians toed the line.

This will shortly look very foolish when the House plays the gruesome video from the Capitol insurrection. And plays things backwards until it leads directly to Trump.

Trump left office with a 29% approval rating. Biden currently has a 59$ approval rating -- contrasted with Trump who never reached an approval rating above 50%. So why are they so afraid of this loser, who twice lost the popular vote. It must suck being a minority of a minority.

Doesn't the majority get to make those kinds of details?

Even Mitch would be happy with that if he truly wants to get rid of Trump.

I'm sure a few more Senators would feel less threatened to vote for conviction.
