not all people in the colonies supported independence, and certainly not all of them supported a violent revolution. this source puts the figure at 15-20% support for monarchy, with 35-40% undecided. but with 45% support for the original patriots, america coalesced around independence.

"unity" generally means that the *losers* in the *minority* put their differences aside or on hold or seek modest concessions from the majority winners. it doesn't mean uniting for the republican agenda. it means uniting behind the agenda the majority voted for.
*if* republicans were to acknowledge this (not gonna happen), *then* it might become reasonable for us to be cooperative and let them have a seat at the table and *slightly* modify our agenda. but until them, no. if they can't acknowledge the election was legitimate and that the people voted for a democratic agenda, then they don't get to even say one word about our agenda.
how can there be unity if they won't even acknowledge the will of the majority?
