Jefferson and Washington towered over most everybody else of the era. Madison must have drank from a different well.

9. When I Was A Kid...
Sat Jan 30, 2021, 05:28 PM

...my parents took me to DC, and toured the famous sites.
The story they told at Madison's house is:
Because Jefferson & Monroe lived in a direction that let them ride across the fields to his back door.
He designed a back breezeway so the door was only 5'6" and the ceiling 6'.
Then when his colleagues came over, they'd be bowing down as they entered the interior door to the kitchen.
Apparently it was a shared joke by all 3, to the point that Jefferson actually crawled in, then said he was groveling for Dolly's attention.
The ceiling was low. My dad did have to duck for the doorway, and he was just over 5'10".
I don't know if that is a true story or not.
But, it's a fun story and I've remembered it for 54 years!

There are theories, but his height is often mentioned in conjunction to his aches and pains.

I have no idea if his stature had anything to do with aches and pains and there are some CT out there. Nevertheless his height is common knowledge. No one even knows what his ailment was or if had a true ailment:...just aches and pains and tall stature....

That makes people tall and gives them long faces. I used to work for a doctor who was a descendant of Lincoln's, and he looked somewhat like him. The other doctors asked about a particular syndrome they both might have had. I can't remember what it's called. Maybe one of the medical types here will know.

Lincoln's unremarkable cardiovascular history and his normal visual acuity have been the chief objections to the hypothesis, and today geneticists consider the diagnosis unlikely

I think he was just tall. Aches/pains and headaches often do not have a known cause..even by today's medicine.

When he was nine years old, Lincoln was kicked in the head by a horse at the Noah Gordon Mill and was knocked unconscious for several hours.[3] Other injuries or trauma throughout his life include having cut his hand with an axe at least once,[4] incurred frostbite of his feet in 1830–1831,[5] was struck by his wife (apparently on multiple occasions),[6]

Being kicked in the head can cause headaches later, frostbite can also cause problems later. The manual work he did as a kid could have caused wear and tear on his joints. He also struggled with depression, which can also cause aches and pains.

I'm actually ashamed I didn't know about the tallest fact, since I've lived in The Land of Lincoln my entire life.
I've read lots about Lincoln. Somehow that tallest POTUS thing slipped past me!
I wonder if the pain he suffered, (given his substantial stature for someone born over 200 years ago), was acromegaly. I have no idea whether he grew super fast at some period in his life.
But, Andre Rousimmof (Andre The Giant) was in nearly continual pain for most of his life.

36. Does That Cause Pain?
Sat Jan 30, 2021, 08:23 PM
Jan 2021

I know it can cause embolisms and arterial rupture.
A guy I played basketball against in HS died of it in his senior year. In those days, the diagnosis was during the autopsy.
The great volleyball player, Flo Hyman, died on the court during a game, from it as well.
I wasn't aware Marfan's caused pain, but I'm no authority.
That sudden growth thing though is connected to Marfan's.
The guy I knew went from 5'4" in 7th grade to 6'9" in his junior year. 16 inches in 4 years!
Terrible shame, human wise & basketball wise. He had NBA written all over him. Carved out of rock, quick, skilled, smart. Was supposed to go to Georgetown. He was going to be the first of John Thompson's big men at center.
Just dropped dead after practice one day!

Lincoln was tall and gangly, but I think that was just him.
There is often money to be made by writing articles and books, so take it with a grain of salt.

They also like to say that Lincoln was a Melungeon, (a mixed race people), but there is no evidence of that.

There are lots of aches and pain ailments that were very difficult to diagnose back then. There was no medical imaging, such as X-rays or MRIs...Many common conditions (osteoarthritis, herniated discs, soft tissue problems) went undiagnosed or treated.

Funny how that worked out. Lol.

but most people lose an inch or two when they get older. His driver's license issued in 2012 said 6'2", though of course he could have lied about it, just like more recently when he claimed to be 6'3".

The problem with lying about his height is that he is one of the most photographed people in the world and there are plenty of pics of him standing next to other famous people. He claimed to be 6'3" during his campaign in 2016, but there were numerous photos of him standing next to Jeb Bush who at 6'3" was clearly taller. He's only fooling himself, if even that.
