The voting rights activist was nominated for her work to promote nonviolent change via the ballot box, by Lars Haltbrekken, a Socialist Party member of Norways parliament.
Abrams work follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights, he said. King won the Nobel prize in 1964 and remains among its most famous laureates.
Abrams efforts to complete Kings work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society, Haltbrekken said, according to a report from Reuters.
The Norwegian Nobel committee, which decides who wins the award, does not comment on nominations, but nominators can choose to reveal their picks. The 2021 laureate will be announced in October.

(3,337 posts)Stacey Abrams - Working tirelessly to promote fair elections, understands the plight of marginalized poor and POC voters, the entire reason Georgia went blue. As well as rockin' her diastema!
OR
Jared Kushner - Mocking states about helping with Covid, asks why Black people don't want to succeed, unsuccessful in business, enabler of his FIL's cruel actions etc...
This really is upside down world.

(3,407 posts)Of course that Kushner has to be on the bottom of the barrel as merit goes, but Stacy Abrams did what she did for the USA, not for peace in the World, and so she does not deserve it either.
We also need to understand that anyone can be nominated for the Peace Price, the buffoon paid to get nominated twice.
Maybe some of you will disagree with what I am saying, and maybe Abrams was nominated just to shove it on Kushner and the buffoon's face, but merit must prevail, and must be true.

First, I'm not sure that the winner is supposed to contribute to world peace, or simply to the cause of peace wherever one is.
Second, in a country rife with polarization that leads to violence, not to mention the direct violence of racism in a state with a quite a history of it, Stacy Abrams gave the nation and the world an example of how to change and improve things through peaceful hard work against great odds. Her achievement is much more than just turning a state blue.
I believe she merits a peace award for her achievement toward peaceful governance that crosses boundary lines which too often lead to violence.

If she doesn't deserve a nomination, I don't know who does.

(6,862 posts)Does the fact that they don't, curious in itself, have something to do with their popular misconception that they're one-of-a-kind, free-thinking individuals?

(3,407 posts)I mean, who nominated Kushner? Alan Dershowitz, a pedophile...Do you really think the academy is going to take that nomination seriously? or for that matter Stacy Abrams?

(1,402 posts)Tough choice...........Stacey Abrams or Alekski Navalny, both have fought so hard and long for the rights of the human race. Jared Kushner wouldn't do anything for anybody unless he was well compensated for it. I wouldn't even want Kushner to take my dog for a walk. Oh, that's right, another just like him nominated him. lol

(2,010 posts)with the unfortunate habit of relieving itself on the walker's shoes?
(as a candidate for being walked by Kushner, definitely not a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize)
But no, I suppose that still isn't fair to the poor dog, no matter how many pairs of your shoes he damaged...
(clarifying again, the dog, not Jared.)
