Me, daughter of a poor working-class immigrant mother; me who earned top grades and advanced degrees from state schools using scholarship money I earned as well as additional money I had to borrow and repay to the taxpayers of this country (to whom I remain eternally grateful); me, who became a college professor because a strong woman on her knees worked her fingers to the bone to help me climb those stairs.
