Manchin warns against Democratic-only coronavirus relief bill

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) warned his party on Tuesday against pursuing a Democratic-only coronavirus relief bill, vowing that Republicans would have input as lawmakers write the legislation.

"I have made it very clear ... we're going to make this work in a bipartisan way. My friends on the other side are going to have input. And we're going to do something that we agree on. I'm not just going to do it just down the lines of, just saying party line vote," Manchin told Fox News' Bret Baier, asked if he would vote for a Democratic-only $1.9 trillion bill.

Manchin added that the final coronavirus bill needs to "make sense," and warned that senators had spent too long trying to make coronavirus relief bipartisan to go-it-alone now. Each of the previous five coronavirus bills have passed along bipartisan lines. His warning against a partisan relief bill comes after he signaled more indirectly earlier Tuesday that he wants the final product to be bipartisan.

Manchin is expected to vote for the budget resolution this week, but said during the Fox News interview that he had told Democratic leadership that "I will vote in a bipartisan way."

I also am not sure about Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona either.

He has seen that the most bipartisan thing the Repukes are offering is a $600 billion package. So does meaning bipartisan mean he’d want to go that low?

befitting his position as a Democratic senator in a state Trump won by 42 points in 2016 and 39 points in 2020.

But nowhere in there do I see him refusing to vote for anything, so I'll put it down as "things Manchin says on Fox News" for now.

When push comes to shove, if the choices are a big bill to help lots of Americans vs. NOTHING AT ALL, and Manchin has to be the deciding vote, we'll see if he does the right thing. Jim Justice agreeing with the idea of "going big" can't hurt.

not too big. Even the Repub gov of the state said he wanted a big package. Manchin has been hanging around Mitch and Susan too long. He doesn't seem to get that all the Repubs want to do is water down and obstruct like they did during the Obama years. We're in an emergency, it's not time for austerity, which the Repubs only want so they can 'make Biden a one term president' like they tried to do to Obama. F that noise.

Biden clearly sent Kamala in to AZ and WV to light a fire under the asses of these conservative Dems and to build support for a big relief package. It was Biden sending the message that he's in charge and is not going to be obstructed by some silly 'gang of bipartisans' like in the Obama era.

that Democrats can flip a few seats in the Senate and expand their majority. That way Manchin will be neutered and he won't have more influence on the bills which the Democratic Party needs to pass. In other words, Joe, there is no reason to kiss your ass and no need to go on Faux News because you have no power or influence against your party.
