I tell you though, whenever I heard news anchors describe the swearing in as historic due to Buttigieg being the "first LGBT cabinet secretary" I kept thinking "openly."

Because God knows there've been many LGBT (mainly gay/bisexual men) legislators, governors, cabinet secretaries - and even a few presidents.

But never openly so - because as you know, even rumors of it meant career death.

So it's a good thing voters (in general) have learned to be a lot more open-minded - and just plain more adult - about others' private lives.

As a lesbian friend of mine used to say: it ain't nobody's business.

And was taught to denigrate so MANY people. For the longest time I mostly just accepted others are different including one of my daughters. Pete's relationship is so seems so pure a melding of intellects and love-well, he makes me smile and that's a good thing.

He is needed in national politics, and being the former mayor of South Bend isn't going to carry very much water for very long.

I'm sure it's a fine place full of fine people, but Americans across the country are going to look for someone with experience in a bigger venue. Being in Cabinet is a SOLID piece to nail to one's CV.
