He had most of the symptoms early last year so we're pretty sure he's already had Covid. He did let them know, before the injection.
Now he said he's having flashbacks to how he felt, before. I told him to call whatever contact number they gave him, and let them know. Also ask if he could be contagious, and what's the tipping point for getting help. His housemates are with him, so he's not alone. They are all great friends so I know they will be checking on him.
I told him his voice sounded good and not as if he was out of breath. Shortly after, that's exactly how he sounded. SO I did mention to him that, although I have no doubt he feels ill, there also might be an understandably slight psychosomatic element at play, here. He agreed. He DEFINITELY sounded better than he did last March, when he called to let me know what was happening.
Hopefully this reaction will end as fast as the less intense ones do. EVEN more hope he didn't catch it, again, and today is the first day it's rearing its ugly head. He's always careful with wearing a mask, etc, but so was my friend who died of Covid.
And, no, this hasn't scared me off, in the least. As soon as I can get the 'jab', I'm showing up.
Anyway, if there are any 'feel better' vibes available, I'd appreciate you sending them his way.

(1,592 posts)Husband and I both had our first shots yesterday - a little achey and wiped out last night, but feel fine today.
My sister had her second shot this week and did have a low-grade fever, chills, aches, etc. Hope your brother feels better soon!

(26,291 posts)He and I are the last of the immediate family. I was so freaked out, last year, but there was NOTHING I could do. No doubt I'll be feeling much the same until he lets me know he's feeling better.
He wonders if his blood type and age have something to do with it. I've got the same blood type and I'm older. That's still not going to dissuade me.

(44,974 posts)It doesn't have any virus in it. Just mRNA coding for spike protein.
So if his reaction is truly caused by the vaccine (and not covid infection) he shouldn't be contageous.

(26,291 posts)I'm a little worried that maybe he actually contracted it, again, and the symptoms are now showing. I don't think the vaccine won't do anything to mitigate that.
I guess we'll know by tomorrow.

(21 posts)My wife has had the first injection, Moderna as well. Two out of five people in her dept. had CV19. They were told if youve had CV19 the first shot will be worse. If you havent had it, the 2nd shot will be worse. Both co-workers that had Covid felt kind of horrible for 2-3 days on and after the first shot.

(34,092 posts)his body seems to be reacting like it is expected to after the 2nd shot.
The second shot is a bigger kick in the pants, since your body is trained in how to react to the intruder by the first shot. My guess is that his body already knows how to reach - from the real life training - so he's getting the major reaction with the first shot.

(16,856 posts)I just had a little soreness around the injection site. As far as I know, though, I never had Covid. Most people I've heard from haven't had a bad reaction from the first shot, but a lot of people are saying the day after the second shot was rough. Good luck to you! You should be fine.

(26,291 posts)Scary doesn't begin to describe it. We're the last of our immediate family so I now tend to freak out whenever he gets sick.

(16,856 posts)Just remember that you can't catch Covid from the vaccine and once you're vaccinated, your chances of getting the virus are very small. Even after the first shot, your chances of getting it reduce substantially.

(2,337 posts)I've always believed if you really make an effort, obviously doesn't always work, but sometimes, when you feel something "coming on" if you decide, no, not happening, and lay low, and wait it out, and don't work yourself up into a frenzy of how sick you feel, etc., it can help from becoming a full-blown thing.
I know I'd be scared if I'd had Covid and again felt familiar symptoms, so good on you. Hope he's feeling better soon, and please do let us know how it goes. Many are afraid of the shots and it's good to read stories, good and bad, of other's experiences.

(599 posts)She and her husband experienced symptoms after getting the shot. She wasn't specific about what symptoms they had, but it was bad enough that they both called in sick from work for "a few days."
(Vitalant used to be United Blood Services, just in case someone is not aware of that name change!)
Not to say everyone will have the same -- or any -- reaction, but hearing about someone with a similar reaction may be reassuring. Hope your brother feels better soon!

(63,221 posts)reacting to the presence of the ersatz virus showing up in their system. They are not getting sick from the vaccination itself.
It's actually a good thing because it means their own immune system is kicking in and fighting what it percieves to be a virus, and it will protect them if they happen to actually contract it at a later point. It is a common reaction and should not be cause for alarm.

(217 posts)First shot just a bit tender, second one, arm really sore, couldn't sleep and had a fever this morning. No headache or sore muscles and the fever is gone now.Not quite back to 100 percent but it went better than I thought.

(26,291 posts)I just got an update from his housemate that he's pale and has shivers, has no appetite and just feels awful. He was about 3 weeks, flattened with Covid. I hope this passes, soon.

(391 posts)The first resulted in a sore arm for about three days. No fever, only a mild occasional headache. I took one 500 mg Tylenol, and that was it.
The second dose was "tolerable"... A little headache and fatigue by time I went to bed on day I received it. Restless sleep with some chills. The following day felt like I was battling a low grade flu - mild body aches, headache, malaise, fever of 99.5. A couple Tylenol and a long nap helped. Went to sleep wearing two sweatshirts and woke up in a sweat. Felt pretty much back to normal in the morning. So, a 36-hour ride.

(26,291 posts)Expecting the worst, but hoping for the best.
I'm pretty tough - successfully completed boot camp while battling a raging bronchial/chest infection bordering on pneumonia, got past carbon monoxide exposure and sailed through Shingles. Never even had the flu. BUT I'm not going to get cocky about the after effects of this vaccine, that's for sure.
Worst I got from it was a little achyness. I got a headache right after them, but it was light.
Arm will hurt like a mother for a day or two, just keep moving it.
Moderna made me a little achy and I didn't sleep well overnight, but was fine after that.
I've also heard of people that had 103 fevers the next day. It's just different for some ppl.

(26,291 posts)Even TB tests barely register. Same with getting revaccinated for small pox, when I was in the Navy. I had ZERO reaction. Not even redness. I guess that first one, when I was an infant, really took.
Last year I had my FIRST vaccinations (flu and pneumonia) since I left the Navy. Barely even any soreness, and absolutely no other after effect. My only concern is, did I have Covid and was asymptomatic, will that trigger a harder reaction from the first jab. Guess I'll find out, when I find out.

(7,440 posts)The question has been asked whether you need the second shot if you had covid, or if the first shot functions like the booster shot in that case.
The answer seems to be that they can't be sure, so get the second shot.

(812 posts)My elderly mom and I got our first shot (Moderna) on Friday, Jan 22. She hardly had any side effects, except a bit of arm pain & fatigue the next day. Then about a week later she got the "covid arm" rash & itchiness that some have mentioned here (it's harmless and should not prevent anyone from getting the second shot).
My side effects were a little more and mostly happened the next day: quite a bit of swelling & some pain at the injection site, fatigue, muscle pain, and low grade fever. But it really wasn't bad and I was actually happy to know that my immune system was working hard to protect me. By Sunday, I felt back to normal again. It'll be interesting to see how the second shot goes...
Definitely worth it when you think of what could happen if you don't get the vaccine.

(26,291 posts)I'll just prepare to feel awful but keep a positive mind set that it won't be that bad.
