Less than a month after that violent insurrection at the Capitol that killed five people, the House of Representatives decided there should be consequences for Marjorie Taylor Greene and her treasonous rhetoric.

Not her fellow Republicans, mind you. In a private vote, they were unwilling to hold her accountable. In public, on the House floor Thursday evening, one Republican after another attempted to recast Greene as a put-upon kid being unfairly tagged with long-ago comments.

A popular refrain: "before she was elected to Congress."

Greene is 46 years old.

This is who Marjorie Taylor Greene is when she thinks we aren't watching. Now she realizes we see her. In Trump fashion, she is attempting to cast herself as a victim.

Numerous "think pieces" after the last election have swirled around this question: Who do Republicans want to be now? Marjorie Taylor Greene forced them to answer.

The House vote to strip Greene of her committee assignments was 230 to 199. Only 11 Republicans joined the Democratic majority in deciding to limit the power of the dangerous extremist in their midst.

Who do Republicans want to be now?

1. Her reaction to being taken out of the committees should be enough to take her out of Congress

"She is RELIEVED" that she doesn't have to go to meetings, I mean...She was not elected to do the work of the people, why should she bother with those meetings trying to pass legislation? She was elected to pick up a $174,000.00/year salary while taking all her time to spew racism, to rub trump's balls on a carboard photo, to incite violence, to promote white supremacist ideologies, and to denigrate the Congress while harassing members of the Democratic party...That is why she was elected, but not to waste time in committees...please...

I have no problem with them getting a lot of perks, as long as they are doing their jobs and serving their constituents. For many members of congress, they spend a lot of time away from their home and family and they usually have to maintain two residences. They should be compensated for the sacrifices that they and their families make. As with any occupation, there will be those who abuse their privileges, neglect their responsibilities, and even break the rules to enrich themselves and their friends.

So I am all for giving them the best, but in doing so, I expect them to be held to absolutely the highest standards and that punishment for violating that trust, be harsh and unwavering. Public service should be viewed as a sacred obligation and there should be little or no tolerance for unprincipled or illegal behavior. If a grade school teacher behaved and spoke like Greene or Boebert, she/he would be fired and probably lose their benefits.

If you want more and better, you need to be more and better than the average person. The fact that people like Greene aren't in awe of their position and the responsibility bestowed upon them is just mindboggling to me. Greene treats it like it is some YouTube or Twitter stunt, that happens to come with a lucrative income and benefits.

The idea that her committee work, working for her constituents, is a waste of her time, is telling. Also, her speech on the House floor where she stated that reading shit on the Internet “allowed (her) to believe certain things”? What. In. The. Wide. Wide. World. Of. Fucks?!?! No one else allows you to believe shit. You are responsible for your own beliefs! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🙄🙄🤬🤬

Though I don't think they want to BE her, they are just too afraid of alienating their supporters. Basically, most republicans will be whatever the voters indicate they want them to be. They aren't Marjorie Taylor Greene at heart, they are chameleons, who believe in nothing aside from winning and holding on to power.

Even this KIND of conversation. What the happened, and when did it happen? Obviously, the election of a petty tyrant and madman went a long way towards normalizing this insanity, but is that all there is to the story?

The degree to which a cadre of lunatics and bigots cling to their chief sociopath is surprising, but not shocking. The vast number of them is shocking, as is the willingness to accept into the fold of crazy anyone who invokes his name. An element of Rumplestiltskin has now burrowed its way into our daily lives and the national conversation.

I am not sanguine about the future.
