For the same reason, Pat Leahy can oversee the trial and still have a vote.

(3,697 posts)I understand that this isn't a "jury" trial and therefore they aren't really 'jurors', but it is wonderfully awful that they get a vote. What I mean is I am completely filled with wonder at how this is ok. My brain just can't wrap itself around this concept. There are a "few" things in our democracy that never were meant to work, or perhaps people never thought they would need to "work." They last four years, and now going on 5, have shown us a lot of holes and muddy puddles.

(938 posts)should have the power to try impeachments because when the Constitution was written, Senator was appointed; they argued that they would be impartial because they wouldnt need to worry about the consequences of their vote on their reelection prospects. Well, then they amended the constitution to make Senators elected and didnt bother to rethink the whole them trying impeachment thing. So 🤷♂️
