BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 02/11/21 06:00 AM EST
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) isnt pressuring fellow Republicans to acquit former President Trump as the impeachment trial appears poised to wrap as soon as this weekend.
GOP senators have discussed their individual views about the trial behind closed doors this week, including at lunch meetings, but McConnell has limited his remarks to procedural steps and the timeline.
Hes never really talked about it to us, said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.). Mitch is a very good tactician... but hes also very respectful that every senator got here on their own.
Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), an adviser to McConnell who hasn't made a decision about whether to convict Trump, said he wasnt getting any pressure from leadership.

(10,024 posts)5. Because GOP talking point is that the trial in unconstitutional!
Use this bullshit talking point and get out of publicly stating your opinion on Trump's guilt or innocence.
Thing is, they are NOT Constitutional scholars. We have a Supreme Court to decide Constitutionality! The SCOTUS even decides what legislation passed and signed into law gets overturned.
Senators need to do their job and convict if enough evidence and let SCOTUS decide if the trial was constitutional (were Trump's rights as President/citizen violated by the trial).

They just want to make McConnell an anti-Trump hero, despite his actions.

This is for show. McConnell knows exactly how this vote is going to go. He, himself, will vote to acquit.
