Ran up to the Hill to check in on the trial, and in 10 mins, it was clear that things are as partisan as predicted.
Sen Roy Blunt says Democrats showing that people were planning the attack for months made their case weaker.
Sens Rubio & Graham said their minds are unchanged.

They won't and don't disapprove of Trump's incitement.

(7,628 posts)keep getting elected then we can expect America to continue on it's present path. All of the Jesus or thoughts and prayers will not help our nation. The cure is clear. Stop voting for racist, misogynist assholes.

(11,569 posts)The desperate attempts to find technicalities wont let Republicans off the hook. They own this!

(82,849 posts)The House managers have been showing that January 6 wasn't some bolt from the blue, but that the pump had been primed for months and months in the days leading up to the Trump mob's insurrection. Naturally, Republicans are complaining that all this preparation makes the case against Trump weaker. If it had been a bolt from the blue, that Trump's mob had just spontaneously come together that day, then they would complain that the case against Trump was weakened under the "nobody could have foreseen" excuse they trot out when that's convenient.

(11,569 posts)Trumps insurrection had been planned for awhile.

(11,738 posts)well some are actually really stupid, but most are just cynical assholes.
The House managers are not building their case solely on what happened on the 6th. This was something that had begun months before the election, then continued in earnest after the election. Trump set everyone up to believe that the election was going to be stolen so that they would not accept the results of the election. He talked about cheating WHILE he was actually cheating. He told his supporters that the election was stolen for months, had his stupid fake lawsuits that proved NOTHING, except to further his narrative about the "stolen" election. Of course his stupid followers were planning for months, they had been told for months, if not years, that some force was subverting their way of life.
ALL of the Republican Senators, except Tuberville (because he is dumber than a bag of hammers) likely understand that this is the case, but they don't care. They are making up weak excuses to vote to acquit.

(11,738 posts)You and I know them for the anti-democracy, anti-decency people they are, but they are able to fool a lot of people and keep their base motivated and a great many eligible voters suppressed to keep things close enough for them to win elections they should not.
We really, as a nation, need to do something about right wing media. It has allowed a large segment of our society to live in a situation divorced from reality. There are people who truly think that Trump one and was somehow cheated, that the stupidity that Q-Anon is spewing, is fact, and that voting for the very moderate Joe Biden, is socialism (plus, most don't even know what socialism is at all).

(11,569 posts)My hope is that, at last, significant enough numbers of Americans are paying serious attention to the devastation Republicans have wrought in every area of our lives. Their pervasive cheating to steal elections has continued, unabated which makes the irony of the Stop the Steal lie a monument to their endless hubris.
I agree with you about the right-wing propaganda and the ways it has severely damaged the fabric of our society. Republicans knew what they were doing when they abolished the Fairness Doctrine during Reagans tenure, and now to exacerbate the assaults on our democracy we have the unelected and unfettered social media companies making too many decisions about our lives, minus any accountability. When you add this to the Republicans half a century war on quality public education, the potential for disaster is being realized daily. We need a plethora of new rights, new regulations and new entities to enforce them.
There is much work to be done.

The trial is best viewed as a branding exercise. Team Raskin has performed admirably. Democrats just have to make the most of it.
