Lindsey Graham's toadyism on Fox News shows where the GOP is heading

Mark it down: Most elected Republicans will end up comprehensively absolving Trump of any and all responsibility for inspiring the attack. His role will be erased entirely. @LindseyGrahamSC's abject toadying on Fox shows where this is all going. My latest:

Opinion | Lindsey Graham’s toadyism on Fox News shows where the GOP is heading
Mark it now: Most Republicans will end up entirely erasing Trump's role in the attack.

News accounts keep claiming Dems have "failed to persuade" GOP senators to break with Trump. This framing is all wrong. It implies most Republicans have principled objections to the case against Trump. Everyone covering this trial knows that's nonsense:

People have rightly ragged on Graham's "what did Pelosi know and when did she know it" idiocy.

But it's also worth noting that the underlying argument -- some preplanned Jan 6, and this exonerates Trump -- is also nonsense. These known facts demolish it:

Graham's evolution:

Jan 6: Graham declares "enough is enough" about Trump's election lies, admitting they incited the attack

Last night: Graham says Dems' presentation was "offensive." But it was all about Trump's election lies inciting the attack:

News accounts keep telling us that the Democratic impeachment managers are struggling to persuade Republicans to turn on former president Donald Trump. But there’s zero reason to assume the vast majority of GOP senators are open to persuasion at all — and this formulation risks badly misleading people about the true nature of this political moment and where it is heading next.

In one such construction, the Associated Press reports that Democrats are struggling to “convince skeptical Republicans” that the former president incited the assault on the Capitol. In another, a New York Times reporter claims Democrats “face an uphill climb in persuading” Republicans to convict.

This implies that Republican senators are weighing the evidence against Trump on its substantive merits and are moving toward rejecting it on grounds of principled disagreement. But is there any serious reason to believe this applies to the vast majority of GOP senators?

Sen. Lindsey O. Graham’s (R-S.C.) latest exercise in toadying on Fox News should lay this idea to rest. It’s worth watching because it previews where most elected Republicans will end up coming down on this whole affair.

Mark it now: The vast majority of them will agree that the storming of the Capitol was an abomination and that the perpetrators must be held to account. But little by little, many will migrate to a place where Trump himself is absolutely and comprehensively exonerated from any culpability for inciting it in any way.

trip down Memory Lane reveals so much of the sickness, that lies within. The lies that are no longer tolerable, are still getting ink in the press, and still being discussed as a valid position on 'news shows'.

to his incompetence, ignorance, and other worse traits, all that is being done now is simply allowing republicans and more importantly, trump to have oxygen and still vent, etc. to anyone that will hear them moan and bitch.

We need to starve the beast, not feed it, and keep trump off of twitter and other online platforms and starve trump's narcissism. Better yet, we need to starve all republicans' twitter access/other online platforms and deny them this voice, since they are inclined to violate their terms of service with these online providers.

If republican senators need anything to convince them of trump's actions being treasonable, ask those ignorant senators why twitter, and all other online platforms banned trump? Are these senators denying that their corporate overlords don't know what they are talking about, and that the senators know more?

I think personally IMHO that Corporate America will start denying these thugs any more campaign funds and I think that this trend is going to accelerate, as more and more of America sees what the Senate republicans are up to and will not hold trump responsible for those deaths and riot of 1/6/21.
