Our present is defined by the context of history and the past.
But, it does not define our future.
If there is no accountability for the insurrection in our Capitol, then we can expect the future to look much like the past and present.
If we want to change the future, then we must change the present.

(9,998 posts)I had hoped and prayed for the reality of which you speak of, but it's not going to happen now, or ever.
Found myself looking at Expats in Denmark websites & blogs last night, and every time I do, I see a place I think I could feel comfortable living. If not for my parents being alive, I'd be pursuing it more fervently. But I see it as a possibility, given what America's outlook is for the remaining years I have left.

(3,023 posts)clearly the FBI and other law enforcement is all over the people that breached the Capitol AND those that may have been organizing the event from afar. So that will be some level of accountability PLUS, maybe more importantly, it may serve as a deterrent to those who think that just ignoring an election outcome and the constitutional requirements around it is up for discussion and violent action.
Also, I think Congress can address the many loopholes, gaps and certain lack of clarity in the law and security procedures that allow folks to get this out of hand and to not be intercepted and stopped BEFORE it rises to the level of full on insurrection. This needs to be done while the Dems have control of the House and Senate and while the events are front of mind...so can't dither on this until 2022.
What I would like to see, is whoever in the WH, the Trump campaign and elsewhere was advising Trump to take all the crazy actions he did to try and discredit and thwart the election result, be brought to light. At least those in the WH, who took the same oath to protect and defend the Constitution, should be investigated and where a case can be made, charged by the DOJ and tried criminally. Again, and to your point about accountability, unless there are clear and painful consequences, this could be the first of such events, not the last nor the most dangerous.
