The excuse was that Doonesbury was pronouncing Mitchell guilty without affording him due process (even though the first three panels softened the language that the evidence developed so far might lead one to conclude that Mitchell is guilty). While a lot of papers pulled just that day's strip, others used it as a pretext for refusing to run Doonesbury at all, and a couple of papers began running it on the op ed page.

Moscow Mitch just says they're all be no vote whip or reprisals for this vote, that it's a vote of conscious for each senator. Of course I don't believe him
