throughout history. The Founding Fathers were all pretty well educated in Greek and Roman history, such as it was at the time, not to mention recent European history in the Age of monarchies and empires.
And commentary about human nature hasn't changed much since the beginnings of civilization. Hell, there are quotes from Plato and Aristotle that still apply.
