Worth remembering: the whataboutism defense was rejected by House/Senate Republicans during the Clinton impeachment because "the president of the United States should be held to the highest standard of anybody in the country” (Rep. Sensenbrenner)

much like how they treated the deficit.

When a republican is in office or in question, deficit or standards are all thrown out of the window. As soon as it's on a democratic president or presidential hopeful, they will put the "highest standard" and deficit back into their concern.
