A university student accused of sitting in the Senate chamber chair of then-Vice President Mike Pence during the storming of the U.S. Capitol last month has been arrested in California.

Christian Alexander Secor, 22, was allegedly among a group of rioters that stormed the building on January 6. He is accused of pushing through a doorway that was blocked by three police officers before marauding through the building with hundreds of other protesters.

According to a criminal complaint filed the same day in the District of Columbia, tipsters provided images and videos of Secor inside the U.S. Capitol Building, both standing on the floor of the Senate chamber and sitting in the Chair of the Presiding Officer on the upper tier of the two-tiered dais at the head of the Senate chamber.

According to the criminal complaint, Secor founded an ultra-right campus group at UCLA called "America First Bruins."

Tipsters claimed Secor, who also goes by the alias "Scuffed Elliot Rodger," defines himself as a fascist and has posted threats online and openly posted calls for America to become a whites-only nation.

Secor, the court document said, is "known to follow an extreme ideology and invite white nationalists to speak at engagements on campus."

Afederal jury has indicted an Arkansas man on a number of charges after he allegedly used a flag pole to beat a police officer during the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Peter Stager, 41, is accused of using a dangerous or deadly weapon to "forcibly assault, resist, impose, impede, intimidate and interfere with an officer," in Washington, DC, last month, according to an indictment unsealed on Wednesday.

Stager is facing a total of seven charges including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, in connection to the attack.

Two of the charges against Stager—"obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting" and "assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon"—carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail.

Yesterday, a mob of Trump supporters overran the US Capitol, causing widespread chaos in an attempt to nullify the results of the 2020 presidential election. In the wake of the attacks, several Republican politicians have claimed the attackers were anti-fascist activists, in spite of the widespread Trump paraphernalia and triumphant social media posts by Trump supporters. But there’s no evidence antifa played a notable role in the riot, and one of the most widely cited examples has already fallen apart.

In a widely heard House speech on Wednesday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (one of 147 Republican Congress members who voted to overturn the 2020 presidential election results) claimed that the mob had been infiltrated by antifa. But Gaetz cited confusing, unverifiable facial recognition evidence from a company that now calls the original article defamatory — and says it identified neo-Nazis, not antifa supporters.

In a speech during the process of certifying President-elect Joe Biden, Gaetz claimed there was “some pretty compelling evidence from a facial recognition company” that some Capitol rioters were actually “members of the violent terrorist group antifa.” (Antifa is not a single defined group, does not have an official membership, and has not been designated a terrorist organization, although President Donald Trump has described it as one.)

Gaetz attributed this claim to a short Washington Times article published yesterday. That article, in turn, cited a “retired military officer.” The officer asserted that a company called XRVision “used its software to do facial recognition of protesters and matched two Philadelphia antifa members to two men inside the Senate.” The Times said it had been given a copy of the photo match, but it didn’t publish the picture.

When hackers exploited a bug in Parler to download all of the right-wing social media platform's contents last week, they were surprised to find that many of the pictures and videos contained geolocation metadata revealing exactly how many of the site's users had taken part in the invasion of the US Capitol building just days before. But the videos uploaded to Parler also contain an equally sensitive bounty of data sitting in plain sight: thousands of images of unmasked faces, many of whom participated in the Capitol riot. Now one website has done the work of cataloging and publishing every one of those faces in a single, easy-to-browse lineup.

Late last week, a website called Faces of the Riot appeared online, showing nothing but a vast grid of more than 6,000 images of faces, each one tagged only with a string of characters associated with the Parler video in which it appeared. The site's creator tells WIRED that he used simple, open source machine-learning and facial recognition software to detect, extract, and deduplicate every face from the 827 videos that were posted to Parler from inside and outside the Capitol building on January 6, the day when radicalized Trump supporters stormed the building in a riot that resulted in five people's deaths. The creator of Faces of the Riot says his goal is to allow anyone to easily sort through the faces pulled from those videos to identify someone they may know, or recognize who took part in the mob, or even to reference the collected faces against FBI wanted posters and send a tip to law enforcement if they spot someone.

"Everybody who is participating in this violence, what really amounts to an insurrection, should be held accountable," says the site's creator, who asked for anonymity to avoid retaliation. "It's entirely possible that a lot of people who were on this website now will face real-life consequences for their actions."
