COLORADO CITY, Texas -- The mayor of this Texas town of about 4,000 people stepped down Tuesday in the wake of a controversial social media post in which he said residents without electricity and water due to a winter storm are "lazy" and "weak," adding that local government and utility services owned them "nothing," ABC affiliate KTXS reported.
Now-former Colorado City Mayor Tim Boyd called complaining constituents "socialist" and then told them: "the strong will survive and the weak will parish.""Let me hurt some feelings while I have a minute!!" Boyd continued in his post. "No one owes you or your family anything; nor is it the local government's responsibility to support you during trying times like this! Sink or swim it's your choice! The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!!"
He also complained that residents were looking for a "hand out" and told them to accept personal responsibility for being left in the cold. "If you are sitting at home in the cold because you have no power and are waiting for someone to come rescue you because you're lazy, is a direct result of your raising!" he wrote. "Bottom line quit crying and looking for a handout! Get off your ass and take care of your own family!" he added.
Boyd later deleted the post after it went viral and drew significant online uproar. In a subsequent post, KTXS reported that he announced his resignation.

Colorado City mayor... literally speechless at how anyone can be this tone deaf in a public service position. People are freezing without information and PAY for these services and somehow we are still blaming socialism.

(920 posts)I honestly did not believe one of them would hold their own constituents to those standards. I am horrified for the people of Colorado City. I guess it shows consistency and a type of soulless integrity in his murderous values.
I hope they get the help they need now that this guy resigned.

We've heard more than enough from this idiot, small town mayor.
He got his 2 minutes, he got creamed, and he's gone. He had no power, and now has no power. He's nothing. He won't be missed by the town. Small town mayors aren't really critical. (We live in a town of 6,000. The mayor could he a snowman and it would change nothing.)
Bigger, more dangerous people on which to focus attention.

(129,029 posts)The "average person" reacts more to what is directly impacting them and not so much what is happening "nationally". And although this Colorado City, TX incident is just a microcosm of society, it is reflecting what seems to be a common theme around the country among a huge cacophony of many similar "microcosms" that are filled with "disengaged voters".
So it's a matter of tapping into this to get people more engaged - not just every 4 years for a Presidential election, but EVERY YEAR, since there are municipal/county/state elections that happen during those "off years".
As an example, it took time for people in Ferguson, MO to finally realize that almost 7 years later and bring about a change. And in a number of cases, when organizations like Indivisible (and now others) step in to help people "make change", then they can actually get people to run who aren't spouting nonsense like "socialist socialist socialist" having no idea what they are spouting other than talking points that were converted into some sort of distorted invective.
ProfessorGAC
(65,044 posts)...not much bigger than CC, i think you're overstating the influence a mayor has.
We've lived here 40 years and not one mayor ran as a D or an R.
I could guess which party most of them followed, but the races themselves weren't D vs. R.
BumRushDaShow
(129,029 posts)that I actually live blocks from and where I often shop (since the sales tax here in Philly is 8% and there, like the rest of PA is 6%).
They have NO "mayor" either. However the town joined with a few neighboring similarly populated "towns" to form what they call a "township" of 20,000 that has a loose governing body (a "Board of Commissioners" ), and where they share resources like police/fire/libraries/trash & street maintenance, etc.
So please spare me.
The issue is that these small locales have some point of contact, be it a "mayor", or "Commissioner(s) ", to the Counties they are in, and that "mayor" or other contact, is usually responsible for keeping that communication channel open to the County for things like emergencies.
ProfessorGAC
(65,044 posts)To spare me.
It's a nothing role filled as a popularity contest.
All your protestations don't change that.
BumRushDaShow
(129,029 posts)the issue has to do with those who are being negatively impacted and they often look for the "closest" one to complain to and that is usually someone "locally" first, before they try to fathom what is going on "inside the beltway". It's a pretty simple concept really.
And it's also a life lesson about how "words matter" and in this case, not only is he out of his job but his wife is now too -

Boyd said his wife was "fired" after his comments and that he wasn't speaking as an official of Colorado City or the county where it sits, Mitchell County. He added that he had not signed up to run again for mayor earlier this month.

All in all, what a world class jerk.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas struck a rare conciliatory tone Tuesday after Twitter users lambasted him for a resurfaced August tweet in which he mocked what he described as California's "failed energy policies." Millions of Texans have been left without electricity for sometimes-lengthy periods of time over the past few days because of severe winter weather.
Many accused Cruz of hypocrisy for criticizing California's power infrastructure over the wildfires and extreme heat waves that plagued the West Coast last summer when his state's infrastructure had proved unable to handle its own inclement weather. "I got no defense," Cruz tweeted Tuesday, responding to the critiques. "A blizzard strikes Texas & our state shuts down. Not good."

In August, Cruz responded to a tweet from the California governor's office urging people in that state to turn off unneeded lights and limit their use of appliances. He described the state as "unable to perform even basic functions of civilization, like having reliable electricity." He then said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as the Biden-Harris presidential ticket wanted to make what he called California's "failed energy policy" the national standard.

Now, Texas' power grid has been overwhelmed, with a higher-than-usual demand for electricity coinciding with a supply threatened by large amounts of ice and snow and freezing temperatures. As of Tuesday evening, more than 3 million Texans were without power, according to the outage-tracking site PowerOutage.us. The power outages, which have included rolling blackouts meant to limit the strain on the system, have affected designated warming centers and shelters.

(129,029 posts)and it is the County seat for their county. If anything, instead of an asinine rant, he could have just printed out some materials for residents from FEMA on winter weather planning - e.g., - https://www.fema.gov/blog/get-ready-winter-weather or https://www.ready.gov/winter-weather
The whole county is less than 10,000 and it appears the only "officials" the county (Mitchell) itself has are either court-related or tax collection related.
