https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/most-black-voters-support-eliminating-student-loan-debt-new-survey-n1258030According to a national poll shared exclusively with NBC News, 67 percent of registered Black voters strongly support eliminating student loan debt. Overall, 84 percent support a full or partial elimination of student loan debt in the poll by the Global Strategy Group for Color of Change, a national civil rights advocacy organization. Fifty-six percent of Black voters have taken on debt to pay for higher education.
The racial disparity in student loan debt remains prevalent for Black people, based on research released in November 2019 by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The researchers found that people in Black-majority neighborhoods were more likely to pay for college through borrowing, with 23 percent of Black residents taking out student loans. However, that figure drops to 17 percent among people in Latino-majority neighborhoods and 14 percent in white-majority areas.
Black voters who were responsible for delivering not only a majority in the Senate, but [also] a Biden-Harris administration overwhelmingly want to see sweeping reform in terms of student loan elimination, said Arisha Hatch, vice president and chief of campaigns at Color Of Change.

(92,213 posts)He would support up to 10K of forgiveness, and push for 0% interest on those loans, along with somehow incorporating some type of volunteer service to be used as a way to pay down those loans.
In addition, he would push for free community and state colleges
As for anyone who would consider sitting out on the next election, thinking that is the way to change things, that implies they have learned very little from the last four years.
It isn't just the President that would make "loan forgiveness" possible, but also it would require Congress, and even if there wasn't a filibuster involved, it is doubtful that all Democrats would be for complete loan forgiveness, so it seems they are setting themselves up for disappointment

(92,213 posts)what I observe to be the situation
There is a very real question whether the President can forgive student debt without Congress, where the purview of commerce, spending and taxing powers falls under.

(22,355 posts)Yes, and I was telling you how it sounded. I suppose that might make it feel personal, making an observation on your observation.
There is a very real answer: He can order the secretary of education to modify federal student loans to zero, which the SoE has the right to do under the Higher Education Act of 1965. Bam.

(22,877 posts)not an operable idea. There is more school debt than credit card debt, because people went to school and graduate school post great recession to keep going. Biden cannot just wipe it all out.. that is la la land. and yes I am being snarky. My own son went through this. What he (Biden) can do, is lower some of the debt.. give people a break if they are out of work, delay repaying until a person is back to work for 6 months and starting to rebuild their financial health.. but this idea that anyone is going to wipe out 50,000 plus in school debt is just not going to happen. We are in a GD crisis right now, and we have to get things done to keep people afloat and alive.
We have got to get jobs back up and running.. people need community college to get certified to enter fields that now demand it. Now that everyone wants a person to have a piece of paper before they get real life experience.. means we need to let people go to community college for free if they are eligible.. (children of the wealthy do not need to have free access, they can pay.. )
Now think this one out, if you are eligible for that and you are shooting for a four year degree you could get your first two years free at a community college and move on out from there.
There is a world of good ideas out there for extended education.. and a compete wipe out of all debt that would then hamstring everyone who is going to need loans in the future..

(22,355 posts)Wiping out student debt would directly address the crisis by helping keep people afloat and alive.

(22,877 posts)Let me try it this way.. as I said, my son has gone through this.. lets say, we wipe out all his debt and everyone in his generations debt..no need to pay it back.. whew.. now lets say you have just graduated high-school..and like our family you cannot pay full tuition.. you need a place to start.. well try getting a student loan if all loans that were taken out previously are given a by.
Again there is a world of wonderful ideas out there.. including how to help those under the burden of the debt they have already collected..
if a person is out of work by no fault of their own or illness.. payments stop.. no more nada.. until say my son can find a job and has it for six months to reestablish himself.. make it a year.. but we can't give everyone who have the debt a full by and kneecap everyone else that comes next.

How about free college for all HS graduate AA students for the next 50 years in lieu of reparations?
