Ady Barkan: Democrats Are About to Make a Big Mistake

Ady Barkan has a message for Democrats: We are about to make a big mistake. Millions of people are uninsured during a health crisis. It will be a tragedy if our only response is to spend billions on COBRA, which sends our tax dollars straight to health insurance executives. We can do better.

that was the point of Biden's executive order opening the ACA exchange so people can buy insurance MUCH cheaper than COBRA would cost them.

Medicare for seniors

Medicaid for the poor (although medicaid in Illinois can be a nightmare,it is way better than nothing)

It's not right to insist it's okay to let people die right now because that will somehow hopefully bring about a future healthcare revolution. To let people go without the critical healthcare they need right now. Especially during a pandemic. The point isn't simply sticking it to healthcare corporations. The point is actually supposed to be about helping people.

He says now is the time for letting more people join medicare

Btw Biden campaigned on lowering the medicare age to sixty so it’s not like his ideas and this gentleman’s are that much different

Most people who lose their jobs can't even afford the COBRA payments. How is this any different than any other part of the ACA? It all goes to insurance companies. How is making things harder for people to maintain their health insurance going to help one damn thing?

Is to subsidize healthcare not insurance

I don't, either. But I care more about people losing access to care. Therefore, I think it's ridiculous to claim the Dems are making a mistake. I seriously doubt people are going to hate it when it's easier to keep their coverage when they lose their job.

I think that, with activism, the laserlike focus becomes more like blinders sometimes.

But

The folks who couldn’t afford cobra are still eligible for the aca exchange

Cobra is more expensive to subsidize because the aca does have some cost controls but

It is harder to find providers with the aca

Biden is basically admitting this by declaring a need to subsidize cobra

24. Health Care Emergency Guarantee Act S3790
Wed Feb 17, 2021, 08:09 PM
Feb 2021
Sanders: During the crisis, we must provide emergency health care to all by requiring Medicare to pay the medical bills of the uninsured and under-insured. We must fully fund Covid-19 testing, tracing and vaccine distribution. At a time when our primary care health care system is faltering, and when millions have no medical home, we must also substantially increase funding for community health centers and the National Health Service Corps, which provides scholarships and forgive student debt of medical professionals who agree to work in underserved areas.

Four years of corrupt, traitorous, colossal fuck ups by Republicans and its incumbent upon Democrats to be perfect? Fact is, not everything will get done the way we all want it. That is not necessarily a mistake.
