I always Google to make sure the food is safe for dogs (and check several sites to make sure they all agree) because some things, certain vegetables and artificial sweeteners are toxic to dogs. I almost gave my dog a melatonin supplement that contained Xylitol and that would have been a mistake.

(65,058 posts)In moderation, and I adjust his morning dog food based on how much people food he got the evening before.
He's 9 & a half, and is 88 pounds, but trim. Doesn't seem to be hurting him any.

(12,428 posts)Or beef or bacon and eggs. The dog has no teeth yet begs for crunchy foods like potato chips and Fritos. I theorize that his viscous canine saliva, loaded with enzymes, can soften them. We avoid giving bread of any sort because that can cause pancreatitis.

One day, I was eating a white chicken breast, and pulled off a piece for her. She accepted it. Wow, she said, and came back for more. I ended up giving her almost the whole thing. How do you say no when you started it?

(1,202 posts)I lost mine a year ago this past December. I used to call him the greatest human being I ever met, because he was more than a dog. He was my everything. I cannot shake his loss. I cannot even think of having another one, and I have never been without a dog for more than 2 months my whole life. But now that I had 15 years with the greatest, I can't bring myself to ever be with another one.

(6,536 posts)to enjoy another dog. Your beloved buddy would approve. Sometimes, as our lives change, we have to measure the length of life left us to how many years a new pet might have and how you would provide should you go first.
But, making another love commitment would not be wrong. You will simply live better if you do -- and, you can always challenge the new dog to be as good as your departed pet.

(4,122 posts)a dog every bit as deserving as the one you lost and shes sitting in a darkened steel cage that is much too small for her, and shes surrounded by other dogs in the same situation and they are all telling each other how terrified and lonely they are. You cant save them all but you can save that one, and though she may never match up to the best dog you ever had, she will heal your broken heart and youll do the same for her.

(10,039 posts)it's limited to dogs. I swear I've had the same dog several times. I'm not talking about little idiosyncrasies here or there. I'm talking about the same damn dog. Different breeds, different sizes, same dog. It could be a "nurture" thing but the way I raise dogs today is diametrically opposed to how I used to. Your friend may be out there waiting for you. He may have been born just this second. Go out and find him.

(6,536 posts)My dog got ahold of a bottle of 5-HTP that I had, and chewed on it like it was a bone. Ended up having to take her to the animal hospital, where I got them to give her a morphine shot. What an awful day.
If this was an apocalypse, I would share what I had, because my fur people are my people, and everybody gets a little -- but not my chocolate, because, you know, chocolate, and that's all mine.

(994 posts)Last bite of human food belongs to the dog. At least that is what Zeus Dog told me. 😃 Works well for the 2 of us. Hes pretty good at pre-washing dishes for the dishwasher too. Is this bad? I dont know. He and I have lived together now for 10 1/2 years. Neither one of us needs medical care often other than basic checks. He seems happy and I know I am. We share sleeping space, too. Why have a special dog bed when you can share your much more comfortable humans bed? Actually during this cold snap, Im really happy to have Zeus next to me.
FYI - Zeus is a vey lean 68 pounds - his vet is very happy with his weight and health status. I feed him high quality kibble and factor in the human food. Dont think Im going to be changing much.

(3,014 posts)I need to cut back, though. I took them to see their clinical vet today (Im not a clinician). She didnt have to tell me - I already knew they were getting a little chunky.
My two pups were rescued from a hoarding situation almost a year ago and treats are how we established trust in humans. But I do need to come up with a lower caloric plan. Lol. Poor pups arent going to understand.

(1,332 posts)Leftover chicken or salmon or turkey. Leftover gravy gets mixed with dry food.
I always make up hamburger and (sometimes) add rice and mix it with dry for
his dinner.
Leftover eggs or hard boiled eggs get mixed with his dry food for breakfast. Also pumpkin.
No potatoes or bread or anything spicy.
Also gets a little banana, apple, mandarin oranges. Not a lot, can cause diarrhea.

(18,402 posts)He was our child, our baby, all 150 pounds of him. (This was before we had children.) But he had a delicate stomach, and when it got ooky, the vet told us to keep him on a diet of boiled chicken and rice. Have you ever had to cook chicken and rice for a giant dog? Id get out a big stock pot and boil an entire chicken and cook another big pot of rice every night, for five or six days in a row until his digestive tract was back to normal.

(24,300 posts)with her fork while she eats. I also cook for my dogs. I just bought 2 lbs of chicken hearts which I will boil with barley then chop it in the food processor. It really doesn't cost much more that quality dog food. They are small and don't eat huge amounts. Those chicken hearts and barley will feed them for about five days for under $4. They also like chicken liver and beef kidney.

(5,172 posts)He even sits at the dinner table, doesn't put paws on table and eats off dinner plate.
He loves black olives, mozzarella cheese, iceberg lettuce, red, yellow and green bell peppers, cucumbers, pizza and grilled cheese. Oh he gets an organic banana every day, he knows the difference.
Sorry I have no restraint, the baby of the house is spoiled.

(8,712 posts)He will eat a little kibble. So these 2 eat baked chicken or hamburger over kibble. As soon as he hears the frig open, he runs into the kitchen. Also, whatever I make I need to give him a bite. When I got him as a 4 month old puppy, I tried all the canned foods - even expensive organic ones - would not eat even a bite. I tried about 10 different kibbles till he decided he would eat Iams. He doesnt like boiled chicken - only baked with juice. My female dog will eat absolutely anything. He loves butter, pancakes, raw chicken eggs - from my chickens, raw bones, vegetables only when dripping with meat juice. Luckily - I like to cook. Ive always had dogs but I must say these two dogs I have now - both part huskies - are the most affectionate dogs Ive ever had. When my long time boyfriend and I are eating, he puts his head under our arms till he gets a bite.

(15,805 posts)Never had any problems with my other pupper s over the years, but this dog is a sneak thief. If I have food on the coffee table, which is where we normally eat, I can't turn my back for a second or she'll eat everything.
We feed her treats separately and never feed her from our plates or let her get too close and start sniffing and licking her chops. In the seconds takes me to go back to the kitchen for something she has licked the plate clean. She is unfazed by any discipline to correct this disobedience and repeats it anytime food is set out so I have to put her out while we eat.
She isn't stupid, knows all her basic obedience commands, but just ignores everything when our meals are the prize. I've never had such a dishonest dog.

(11,470 posts)To keep him healthy puts carrots, green beans and celery in food processor and mixes with dog food. We put pieces of real chicken meat on bottom of bowl.
We are retired and trying to keep him healthy knowing it would cost more for him to get sick than us.
We used to give him pieces of our food but he gained weight so we stopped. Our dog is so spoiled with attention, toys, walks, dog park, he has all he needs.
Spends a good part of day on bed in guest room watching hubby on computer or sleeping. 😁

(3,486 posts)If we have pizza they may get a piece of crust. When we grill steaks the 2 older beagles get to lick the plate the cooked steaks were brought in the house on. They love that. The baby beagle does not get that as its a treat reserved for the senior beagles. But that's about the only human food they get.
Of course there are days when the senior beagles won't eat their dry food and demand to have some chicken. So we'll give them that again due to their age.

(302 posts)The best can is not really fit for human consumption..because it's made with crap. Dogs die of cancer more than being hit by cars and it's because of the food. Sorta like us eating junk food. Making your own dog food allows you to control what they eat. It's hard finding a really consistent message on exactly what to put in it, but I keep it pretty simple. Real unseasoned meat, pureed chick peas, pumpkin and rice. Using chicken thighs, it's far cheaper than most canned dog food.
What they really want is all meat. We give them scraps of meat too and a little cheese every now and then.
