"I know the past few years have strained the relationship," Biden says of long-standing allies. He doesn't mention Trump by name, of course he doesn't have to, but this is the strongest rollback yet of 'America First' agenda. Biden also reverses removal of US troops in Germany.

Biden says "democratic progress is under assault."
He says the world is at an "inflection point' between democracy v. autocracy -- "a fundamental debate about the future & direction of our world."
"I believe with every ounce of my being that democracy will and must prevail"

I know some people close to me that discount the idea that the United States could ever not be a democracy, and it's because of the post-WW2, post-Cold War eras were were born in, when it didn't even seem to be a question. But those people also don't spend much time studying what has been happening in Europe over the past decade, or in India, or other nations around the globe.

It just becomes so obvious in the context of the broad-based international changes that are under way, and also in recognizing that in many cases the same actors are behind it, or support it by underhanded means like cybernetic activism or financial support.

This could really strengthen the Democratic party if this becomes a stark choice between autocracy and democracy.

I still think they see it as a bullet we dodged rather than an ongoing process that could take years to work through.

It's also a misunderstanding about the balance of power. Some people think, "There are more of us than them" but as most of us realize, it's not that simple. Power is about more than numbers.

Although there weren't many of them, some people said, basically: Joe Biden was sworn in on January 20, thus proving that the system works. Everything worked out just as it was supposed to, and the courts held...
