Democratic AGs Urge Congress to Adopt Resolution Calling on Biden to Cancel Student Loan Debt Now

https://lawandcrime.com/education/democratic-attorneys-general-urge-congress-to-adopt-resolution-calling-on-biden-to-cancel-student-loan-debt-now/
Ratcheting up pressure on President Joe Biden on a key goal of his party’s left flank, a group of Democratic Attorneys General urged House and Senate leadership in a letter on Friday to adopt resolutions calling on the commander in chief to use his executive authority under the Higher Education Act to cancel up to $50,000 in debt for “each and every Federal student loan borrower.”

Biden has resisted such calls, which have now been amplified by 15 chief law enforcement officers throughout the country, including his party’s rising stars.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy headlined the letter, joined by 15 other Democratic AGs: William Tong (Conn.), Kathleen Jennings (Del.), Clare Connors (Hawaii), Kwame Raoul (Ill.), Brian Frosh (Md.), Keith Ellison (Minn.), Aaron Ford (Nev.), Gurbir Grewal (N.J.), Hector Balderas (New Mexico), Ellen Rosenblum (Ore.), Thomas Donovan Jr. (Vt.), Mark Herring (Va.), Bob Ferguson (Wash.), Josh Kaul (Wisc.), and Karl Racine (D.C.).

The attorneys general say the pandemic has exacerbated longstanding problems and will leave many Americans, especially minority communities who are being disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, in a permanent state of hardship.

that he doesn’t believe he has the authority. This doesn’t increase the pressure on him at all.

Assuming he actually does have the executive power to do so, which he sure seems to be claiming is possibly the case, or have his Secretary of Education do so.

Biden Considers Student Loan Cancellation By Executive Order

Snip

Authority for student loan cancellation

According to Warren and Schumer, the Higher Education Act of 1965 provides legal authority for the U.S. Secretary of Education to cancel student loans. They reference Section 432(a) of the Higher Education Act, which grants the U.S. Secretary of Education the authority “to modify, compromise, waive, or release any right, title, claim, lien, or demand, however acquired, including any equity or any right of redemption.” Based on this provision, they argue that it’s unquestionable that the president (through the Secretary of Education) can cancel student loans for all student loan borrowers.

to pretend he’s not doing enough. If you look at the election results, people are tired of negative claptrap.

..primary education, since the US lags around 28th in preK & K.

His objection was in forgiving those of elite colleges when our primary education is at such a dismal low .

I have to agree with him completely on this thought.

One demographic demands 50 grand, while early ed schools & struggle for supplies.

Because a family chose to send their college student to an elite university or private for bragging rights, and (yes, some definately do that) where the elite name costs far more than an equally good program elswhere is where the line has to be drawn.
Especially as one takes a much closer look at the state of early ed in this country.

"$50,000 for me but Zero for thee", is an embarrassing look at our society, as we ALL are asked to crawl & sacrifice our way out of this dilemma.

I totally get President Biden's point.

Where did the $50,000 amount originate?
Just asking cuz i do not know.
