An Oath Keeper Charged In The Capitol Attack Fears For Her Safety Because She Is Transgender

Jessica Watkins, an Oath Keeper charged with conspiring to storm the US Capitol, has asked to be released from jail pending trial, alleging that she has been “treated harshly” and is at “particular risk in custody” because she is transgender. She also argues she is no threat to the public and only went to the Capitol because “she believed that the President of the United States was calling upon her.”

Watkins, 38, a former Army ranger who served in Afghanistan, was “forced out of the military after her sexual orientation was discovered,” her attorney wrote in a motion for home detention filed late Saturday. In the petition, Watkins alleged that while in a county jail in Ohio, she was stripped naked and left “in a cell with lights on 24 hours a day for 4 days in full view of everyone.” According to the attorney, that was a response to a hunger strike Watkins went on in a failed attempt to get medical attention for an injury to her arm.

Watkins has been held in at least two facilities since her arrest, including the Montgomery County Jail in Dayton, Ohio. A spokesperson for the county sheriff’s office, which administers the jail, said she could not provide immediate comment. It was not clear Saturday night where Watkins was currently being held.

Watkins, who operates a bar called the Jolly Roger in Woodstock, Ohio, turned herself in and was arrested on Jan. 17. She is facing some of the most serious charges to come out of the Jan 6 insurrection.

the responsibility of the agency holding them. If her allegations are true, they need to be rectified.

I don't know a lot about the legal system, but I would suppose that whoever is representing her legal rights should be addressing these issues.

Our prisons should not be lawless torture pens. If we take away freedom in order to protect the rest of society, we are obliged to protect those whom we warehouse.

Not her gender orientation/identification.

What she decided to do on January 6th is why she is in jail. Using this as a means to get special treatment could be interpreted in the wrong way.

Justice is blind, but should also be applied according to the law equally.

Kind of like the “I have to have organic food” fake shaman guy ...

They do something horrifically terrible and then cry about their “exceptionalism.”

None of those things seemed to matter before they were arrested.

Why are they supposed to matter afterwards?

Someone can be both a bad, evil person, and also be entitled to humane treatment, no matter what they did. Also, if we allow poor treatment of criminals, it inevitably seeps back into normal society, where barbaric treatment of others is normalized.

Her dear leader kicked her out of the military for her sexual orientation, and she claims to be following her dear leader's orders by forming a

"subset (Oath Keepers) of the most extreme insurgents that plotted then tried to execute a sophisticated plan to forcibly stop the results of a Presidential Election from taking effect.”

In the article it mentions among other disturbing things, that she was stripped naked in the cell with lights on 24 hrs for several days.

that shouldn't happen, but she has no defense other than being mentally challenged at the minimum.

No sympathy, she chose to follow drumpfs begging and anti-American twisted lies. She chose to be a nazi white nationalist sympathizer, she chose to riot at the Capitol and this is the punishment. I do hate what they have done to her, but she was an Army ranger and is a danger to the country. Put her in private detention, don't let her go. Too many insurrectionists have been released and disappeared.

She created her own threat by not thinking about what her participation might unfold.
-- She's likely in danger.
-- She needs to be careful.
-- Yes, she may die as a result.

But, she did not prove that someone else did this to her, although I suspect she will.
