"SNIP......

Suffolk University-USA Today poll found that 46% of Republicans said they would abandon the GOP and join the Trump party if the former president decided to create one.

Only 27% said they would stay with the GOP, with the remainder indicating they would be undecided.

It would take them about five minutes to realize that splitting the party means the end of it on a national scale.

They're dumb but they're not that dumb.

Mitt's Believers? I honestly don't know who the not-Trump Republican Party is and what they stand for.

I think there could very well be many more of the latter than anyone realizes. And the disillusionment isn't just with Trump - it's with Republicans who enabled him and pushed the lie about the election being stolen. There are reports that they're leaving the GOP in droves.

I also think there were always a lot of people who supported Trump simply because he was a Republican president. Now that he's gone, those non-diehards (for lack of a better term) retain no loyalty to him.

The sane GOP should consider that there may be people who would join a sane GOP party. i am not one of them, but there are people like my mother. She voted Republican to be true to her Abolitionist ancestors, and because of the somewhat overbearing Daley machine politicians in our Chicago neighborhood. You bet my mother noticed the tumult around the Dixiecrats and their antipathy to the Civil Rights movement. You bet my mother noticed when the Dixiecrats were ejected from the Democratic party and joined the Republican party. I will never forget the bewildered look on her face, near the end of her life, when she confessed to me, "I guess I am voting for the Democrats this year." Maybe there are people like that out there. I say to any lurking Republicans, Let the Trumpers leave. Kick them out the way we Democrats did. Actually, the Trumpers are very much like the old Dixiecrats, aren't they? The Democratic Party improved about a thousand percent when we got rid of these racist bullies.

Sane Republicans could go back to their roots, to Honest Abe, and start over. They could sing the 1860 and 1864 campaign songs. Abe Lincoln and Liberty, Too! is a song written and sung by Abolitionists, with lyrics that would still infuriate the reactionary wing of today's Republican Party. Let the chaff separate itself from the wheat, so to speak.
