That is (often) different from 'it won't work anymore'.

Are you suddenly seeing ads places you never did before?

What browser?

but still have ads after using this for years. Even my little adblocker icon is gone. Then, while trying to research what was going on, I came across a statement somewhere (had been on many articles at that point so I don't remember which), i read a sentence that said that as of Jan 20th, they are no longer doing Windows 7.

It's a browser extension, so it shouldn't matter what operating system you have, but no guarantees.

It's what I have used for a long time.

7. One way to block most ads...

...is to modify your "hosts" file on your computer.

Basically, a massive list of sites that do ads, malware, spyware, phishing, etc., is put into Windows and tells your computer to try to find the site... by looking on your computer.

Of course, your computer isn't the source of ads, malware, or spyware, so it can never find what it's told to look for.

Spybot S&D has software that will "immunize" your computer (it puts entries in the hosts file), and MPVS has one as well.

I have both, currently. And you can open up your hosts file in Notepad and put in whatever you want, like if you want to keep your kid off of Twitter or Facebook.

17. I've been using Pi-Hole - software on a Raspberry Pi that kills almost all the ads.

Takes a tiny bit of work to set up, but it hangs on your network and then the Pi acts as the primary DNS server for site lookups, and drops all calls to ad sites from all of the devices on your local network. A single web page may contain many, many links to download ad content, and this strips off the vast majority of them. Super-easy setup, and it works really well.

I'm running it on a Raspberry Pi Zero, and it's been running and dropping most of the ad domains for the past 2 years or so. I just checked and it looks like about 24% of the DNS lookups from the systems on our LAN were blocked. There are over 130,000 domains on the blocklists! This makes for a BIG drop in the actual amount of network traffic, also, since unlike most ad blockers this never downloads the ad content to begin with (instead of downloading it, then just not displaying it). You can even set it up with a VPN so you can use it on-the-go and cut your data usage - handy if you are on any type of limited plan!

Here's the site that shows you how to set it up, step by step:

https://pi-hole.net

A Pi-Zero costs about $10, and you'll also need a power supply wallwart. See the Pi-Hole site for full info about the setup.

Good luck!
