Let me start by saying I am glad Mr. Woods is not dead BUT He should not be the Top Story
* We had hearing today that showed some inside jobs and extreme under preparedness when it comes to domestic terrorism and the 1/6/21 attack on the Capitol! Crazy nutjobs who believe and may try something March 4th.
* We have a Democratic Senator screwing President Biden's Cabinet picks for all I can see is a sexists double standard
* We still have DeJoy still screwing up the Post Office
* We have Texans getting screwed by utility companies because Texas allows fundamental needs like heat, light and water to be sold at the highest prices so corporates America can make money
and oh yeah we have about 100+ Senators and Congressional Reps who aided and abated an attempted coup
But the freaking major story is a sports athlete in a car accident.
Am I stupid here? Am I insane?

(153,170 posts)Tiger is news-worthy but the tabloidish coverage is indeed ridiculous.

(1,114 posts)The tabloid has got to stop in serious journalism.

(1,167 posts)This is important to Tiger Woods and his family and friends, and, I suppose, those who avidly follow golf, but not to the rest of us. Personally, I could live my entire life not knowing anything at all about Tiger Woods and be perfectly content.

(153,170 posts)I think it is pathetic that a guy that hits a ball from one hole to another - that is literally what he does - is considered some kind of superstar, but he is - that's sports mania bullshit but, well, it is what it is.

(7,968 posts)This is what the media does. They play for ratings not the actual news. That is still true even for the mainstream CNN and networks who clearly turned against the right-wing crazies. They are still beholden to their ratings not the truth. I'm right there with you.
Hope Tiger is OK and I hope Tiger can still play golf but you are right - it isn't a lead story.

(28,807 posts)which makes me glad that I have stuck to DU, WP and the Atlantic for my news today.
I'll probably go to C-Span.org to watch the hearing about the Capitol attack, though the biggest part of it I don't want to miss is Amy Klobuchar.
on a normal day i spend some time at msnbc.com to watch Nicolle Wallace, Chris Hayes, etc, but I may just skip it today.

(63,908 posts)priorities are screwed up. There is so many imperative matters that need our attention. Capitol Riot Hearings, our Postal service, the debacle in Texas.

(32,679 posts)They're all Facebook/Twitter wannabe's - and that's the way it is.
Now the TV news media are driven by the SMS because that's where all the $$ and the clicks are. Scary isn't it? We on DU are doing our part ,but we're relatively small numbers.
When DU gets so big that we can drive the advertising dollars the same way Rush Limbaugh did for 30 years ... well, look out Loretta! But we're nowhere near there now.

(1,910 posts)Good lord, the guy hits a stupid golf ball. How on earth is it a story when he obviously looked down at his phone, lost control while going too fast, and crashed? Whatever, he has health insurance and is rich so he will recover just fine.

(883 posts)To cover up real news stories they don't want the public to notice. Like when they went overboard on Michael Jackson on charges the DA knew wouldn't go to trial. It covered over the missing millions from Chaney's contract company during the Iraq war.

(19,864 posts)overblown the coverage - all in the name of ratings.
Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, Lawrence O"Donnell did thoroughly cover all of the political going-ons for the day.

(854 posts)was totally taken aback that the first hour focused almost entirely on Woods. I changed the channel when they started in again in the second hour.
I'm not a golf fan, but realize he was a phenomena in the golf world and the breakout star of his day. My best to his recovery, but given everything else going on in the political world - this is what you want to cover wall-to-wall? Geez Louise!! I tune into this show for political news and commentary - not traffic accident reports.

First Speaker
(4,858 posts)...in 1925, when Babe Ruth had his famous collapse in spring training--"the belly ache heard around the world"--it dominated the national headlines for days. It was front-page news even in England. Ruth was the most famous man in America, and everything he did was news--the good, the bad, and the ugly. Whether or not they should be, the blunt fact is that the American people *are* more interested in sports than they are in the day-to-day workings of Washington, except in rare cases.

(9,990 posts)Of course you wrote this almost 24 hours ago, so, some things to consider:
Joe Manchin is, and always has been, a DINO. But if he goes, we'll get something worse, probably. It's WV, after all. They're messed up over there.
DeJoy will be gone sooner rather than later.
Texas is a law unto itself. I don't know what anyone else can do about it. Texas needs to rise up and demand better of its own government, and until they do, the rest of us can only sit and watch the freak show in horror.
The FBI has all the Congressional phone records. We just have to wait and see what happens.
And yeah, that's weird, but it is what it is.
And no, you are not insane. Change the channel. It wasn't the major story on MSNBC.
