(Bloomberg) -- Republican Mitt Romney said Donald Trump likely would win the GOP presidential nomination if he decided to run again in 2024.
The Utah senator, the only Republican who voted to convict Trump in both of his impeachment trials, said he expects the former president will continue to play a big role in the Republican Party even though he was voted out of office.
He has by far the largest voice and a big impact in my party, Romney said at a New York Times DealBook virtual event on Tuesday. I dont know if hes planning to run in 2024 or not, but if he does, Im pretty sure he would win the nomination.
The two wings of the GOP -- traditionalists like Romney and Trump loyalists -- are struggling over the partys future. Trump has continued to exert a strong hold on Republican voters. A plurality of them, 46%, said they would abandon the GOP and join a Trump-led party if he were to create one, according to a USA Today/Suffolk poll conducted last week.

Yes, that will effectively cede control of the government to the Democrats for the foreseeable future, but is that really such a bad thing? Can you admit that we're not a pack of bolsheviks? That even if we won't govern the country the way you'd prefer, we're a hell of a lot better for the nation than your party in its current diseased state?

This is a fund and ego raising crusade for him. Winning isn't his goal. Revenge and profit are.

(3,784 posts).............and second, how is Trump going to win the nomination FROM PRISON?
I predict that by the time 2024 rolls around, the Trump name is going to be so toxic that all the frontrunners for the Republican nomination will spend the majority of their airtime telling people how NOT like Trump they are, and how they never really liked the guy.
Anyway, back to the CPAC poll. I remember that in 2009, the CPAC poll declared that Sarah Palin would win the 2012 Republican nomination in a landslide. And in 2013, the CPAC poll showed that Jeb Bush would win the 2016 nomination. The people who participate in the CPAC poll are notoriously stupid and short-sighted. And a lot can happen in 3 years.
Quite frankly, if Trump isn't either dead or in prison in 2024, I'll be shocked.

(4,611 posts)Up-and-coming psychos like Hawley aren't going to politely step back and wait eight more years for their shot at running. Even the slightly-less-psychos like Haley are slowly beginning to signal they won't sit on their hands for eight more years.
Trump is damaged enough that if he runs, he will face a circular firing squad.
