Rep. Gerry Connolly
@GerryConnolly
Sorry, you lose the right to complain about partisanship once you've fanned the flames of violent insurrection.

I didnt vote to overturn an election. And I will not be lectured by people who did about partisanship.

(25,981 posts)Good for Connolly. Every Dem representative should make those points over and over again, whenever they have the chance. It can never be said too often.

(20,712 posts)The civility norms of the senate were trounced long ago. It's time we start to act and sound like the U.K. Parliament and really have at it on the floor!

(24,311 posts)They want to overturn an election and install Trump as some sort of dictator.
What they are not realizing is a dictator won't have much use for a Congress.

(42,862 posts)Maybe some of his constituents find that to be "endearing" about him. Or perhaps they're secretly embarrassed for him, but in order to protect him from criticism, they say things like "Oh, isn't that endearing?" or "He's a rebel!" (How else could his voters hope to explain away their cult-like devotion to him.)
Personally, I think politicians should focus more on being effective leaders, rather than being showboating "rebels" who intentionally try to "make a scene" ---even if passive-aggressively--- while discarding all the norms of civilized behavior (such as wearing proper clothes.)
No politician should spend so much effort in trying to make THEMSELVES the center of attention when they've done nothing particularly special to DESERVE the attention. #LookAtMe (or something).
Ugh.

(3,191 posts)It should be about the collective good, nobody should showboat. We are all Democrats and want the same things. Thanks Jackie!

(42,862 posts)Honestly, I think our elected politicians have an obligation to be dignified and to respect the "norms" of civilized society. Whether it's wearing a suit and tie to work... not treating every day as "casual Friday"... or not debasing themselves like Dick Cheney or Donald Trump were known to do with their choice of words... avoiding being crude and vulgar for example.
All I'm trying to say is that the "civility" we expect from our elected representatives doesn't matter (to the same degree) in this format. As much as we all love our DU forum, we're really not as visible or influential (or on display) as we'd like to see ourselves. It's just unrealistic to expect this group to have the same sense of solemn responsibility and demeanor that we need from politicians.

(11,564 posts)It's easier to use proper grammar when you write, as opposed to speak. Imagine what it sounds like when I speak - I know most of the rules of grammar, but can't seem to put them to use.

here's how Robert Reich reframed Turtles KkKonell's politically savvy yet totally Bullshit claim:
HR1 is being voted on next week. McConnell calls it a "power grab" because it:
-Establishes Automatic Voter Registration
-Prevents voter purges
-Ends gerrymandering
-Expands early voting
-Takes aim at Citizens United
It is a "power grab" -- grabbing power back for the people.
Dude.
