repair to Tiger's leg - he is allowing his doctor to report out

Surgeons say the 45-year-old suffered 'comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones' in the crash - meaning his shin and calf bones splintered into more than two pieces each and were left sticking through the skin.

Woods also sustained 'additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle', his doctors said, which had to be stabilized with screws and pins.

its going to take him years to fully recover. My wife broke her tibia in two places. She had extensive surgery like him. It took her over a year before she was back to almost normal. One of the issues being that you often end up with a shorter leg. She had to learn to walk again and get the rest of her body to adjust to her new gait.

is a thing of the past. The amount of torque a professional golfer places on their body is tremendous. They say there are two types of golfers; those with back problems, and those who are going to have back problems. Throw in a leg that mangled and he'll have trouble walking 18 holes again. There were very well documented rumors that Woods used steroids and HGH during his best playing years, and steroids will turn your bones to dust with prolonged use. I say well documented rumors instead of facts because Woods never admitted this. Let's put it this way, people saw such substances in his home. I say this because Woods is such a hero to some they'd be hopping mad at such talk.

And walking incorrectly puts pressure on the hips and back.
Which begin to hurt as well.

I had similar injuries but less severe that Tiger's.

Tiger may have to wear special inserts in his shoes from now on if one leg is shorter than the other.
Or because of the broken ankle, which I had as well as the leg fracture, and I have to have inserts because of the broken ankle.

I was in a car accident in 2006. I was cut out of the truck I was riding in with the jaws of life. I was compacted into about a two foot space in the cab. I had severe injuries, including back and neck fractures. I have rods and plates in my L2 and am fused from my L2 all the way into my pelvis. I was in really good physical strength and health, so that made all the difference in my recovery. I don't walk as upright as I used to, and there is always pain, but I work part time and do okay. Tiger will do well in his recovery because he is in top physical health. He won't be the same, but he's got a lot going for him and he's a fighter.

I'm guessing there were a lot of follow-up surgeries, as well.

Tiger likely has rehab facilities at home, so it's a good bet he'll recover, but steel inside is a challenge, and look at the size of that rod. Amazing what doctors can do.

kept a journal. I've been too chicken to read his journal, even after all these years. I know some of the details of what I went through, but I was in the hospital for 5 months that first time... I don't remember most of it because of the medical induced comas, and I'm okay with that. lol

I wouldn't be surprised if Tiger has several surgeries in his future. But, like you said, he has the best of rehab, so he's going to be okay. Not sure if he'll be able to golf in the same way, but he'll golf. Maybe move into a coaching position with his son. I watched some of the Father-Son tournament they were in. They seemed so happy and his son is super talented. It seemed Tiger was bursting with pride and joy of his son. It was fun to watch.

The medical technology of today amazes me. I have several friends recently go through heart procedures. In for a couple days, and then home. All done through the groin! Crazy!

I was about to correct that for our viewers. It annoys me no end when people do such great pics with poor research. But holy crap, that's a bad break...or set of breaks! His tibia was literally destroyed and the surgeon had to put it back together again. And it's not only the bone, but you have to consider veins, arteries, muscle, skin, the whole megillah. No wonder it took 6 hours! Holy shamoley! That is one rock star surgical team! (I'm a nurse, so you have to understand that's where my admiration goes.) It almost makes Alex Smith's leg reconstruction look penny-ante by comparison, and that one was heroic. So the next worry is infection, I gather. Tiger has a long road back. Very long.

One of the broken bone pieces pierced the skin.
The rod is holding it all together.

There are three very big screws holding his ankle together.
Often when you break your ankle, bones in the foot are broken as well.
Those bones are smaller, and break more easily.

They did not pin together the Fibula. They were able to reposition the broken bones there and it will heal on its own.

I broke my fibula, tibia, ankle and foot bones falling down the stairs.
However not as bad as Tiger however, not nearly as bad.

There is a lot of pain and rehab with this kind of injury.
And my injuries were not as bad as Tiger's.

I was very fortunate... the new (to Northern Vermont) doctor that treated me had previously worked with the medical team for the Detroit Lions and loved the challenge... later told me his first inclination was to cut it off... but... started with an external fixator with lots of screws and then a rod in my leg, then a cast and in between a cut taken out of my tibia and marrow transplants

seven surgeries and and therapy later I was, and am, able to walk pretty normal

Apparently the left leg is OK.

So how did the right lower leg get mangled this badly, since it is next to the console? Did the drive train move up and back and clamp the leg against the steering wheel shaft?

I had a resident assistant my freshman year who had a skiing accident the previous winter. Caught an edge and twisted the tibia and fibula around each other. He was still on crutches about 8 months later. Of course treatment has advanced in the many decades since.

A dislocation means the bones were offset at the break. Basically, my fibula was about sitting on my ankle. I had surgery on 2/2 and now I have about 10 screws total, and a plate in my ankle. I have to spend most of my time with my leg elevated ("the tips of your toes above the top of your nose" the doctor said cheerfully) I can't put any weight on it and I have one of those scooters for my right leg when I have to get up and move around. Until at least March 16th.

for perspective, we crank out a few hundred of these on a good day, every day. and there are other manufacturers, too. that's how many tibia fractures there are. most are, of course, more simple fractures, but generally nails will go in people who have serious breaks and good coverage.
