Something frightening that needs attention soon

State laws being enacted that make it hard for likely Democratic voters to vote.

There are so many other issues that also need immediate attention. But this one scares me, maybe the most.

Nixon conspired to keep Viet Nam going so he could run on "peace". He committed treason, and Johnson didn't want to subject the country to a trial of that.

If only republicon cheating and treason had been punished back then, instead of allowed to get worse and worse.

but in the states in question Republicans hold power. We can only do so much when we’re in the minority. And nationally, we have two Dems who won’t get rid of the filibuster, eliminating the chance of a nation wide voting rights bill.

circumstances. Also, that Stacey Abrams deserves a tremendous amount of credit for her work on voting issues.

My point is that Democrats have known about this for decades, and mainly stuck their heads in the sand liked they hoped it would go away.

Cheating and stealing works for republicons, they won't stop unless forced to.

HR-1, "For the People Act" https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/1 it was the first bill Congress passed, but Mitch would not bring it to the floor. Don't know when it's slated to be brought up again, but I think the other bill they want to see passed through reconciliation is the infrastructure one. So after that they have to make sure all the Democrats are on board. It isn't the elected officials that need to 'get right on it', it's the people who live in states that make it impossible to vote....like Stacey Abrams, and all the other activists and lawyers. It's a shame that if it isn't on tv it isn't happening.

and increasing voter registration. See the surprise upsets this past election in Georgia and Arizona.

to really combat voter suppression, it requires electing more Dems at the state legislatures to pass better laws, and to appoint better federal judges since Trump stacked the courts in the GOP's favor.

It's the one issue that, if we win, we win so many other of our fights.

Maybe it was an exaggeration at the time, but I remember posting that i thought this beat out COVID and Climate Change. We'll never address Climate Change if we don't fix voter suppression.

It's like the foundation of the house we build everything else upon.

ACLU

See: https://www.aclu.org/issues/voting-rights/fighting-voter-suppression

Voting rights are under attack nationwide as states pass voter suppression laws. These laws lead to significant burdens for eligible voters trying to exercise their most fundamental constitutional right. Since 2008, states across the country have passed measures to make it harder for Americans—particularly black people, the elderly, students, and people with disabilities—to exercise their fundamental right to cast a ballot. These measures include cuts to early voting, voter ID laws, and purges of voter rolls.

The ACLU is engaged in advocacy and litigation across the country to get rid of these harmful voter suppression measures once and for all.

If we let these guys get away with .5% of what they're implementing that's going to make it harder for people to vote.

The filibuster must die in order to pass new voting rights laws that will block the GOP from rigging the system for minority rule for the next decade.

We are once again in a position of having a majority according to the press, but a technical and practical minority, given Manchin being a republican in democrat clothing, and two senators technically not being democrats

My personal thought is put things up for votes. Even things we will lose on. Especially things we will lose on. And then full court press in the court of public opinion. Put all the policies up for a vote, tell everyone we are doing it. One major policy a week until the next election. And when the fail one by one, we point out that the republicans killed them. Democrats did everything in our power, but we were blocked. Every week a new thing people want.. gets denied, out in front of the whole country.

Minimum wage
Health care cost controls
Education plans for College, high school, preHS.
Roads and bridges
Protections for seniors
Farmers
Immigration
Health care coverage for all
Environmental protections
Tax cuts for the poor, tax increase for the extremely wealthy, tax reform overall
Real voting protections for all citizens
Transparent voting
Worker protections
Womens rights

There are so many things we need to work on that its hard to keep all these major issues in ones head, Ive left out many important ones, and others that I cant even phrase right so late. But Roll them out one by one. Make everyone vote, and make their votes public. Spend the money, time and effort to make sure that their constituents KNOW how their senator voted on the issues that matter to them. Keep the bills simple and single issue, so theres no "i would have voted for it, but theres this other issue in the fine print" excuses to be made.

What we should do in blue states is Open up voting as widely as humanly possible. Turn it all Vote by mail, with easy to understand ballots and schedules, and fully transparent counting.

Run our elections SO Darn Well that they are the gold standard of the world.

in the senate, or will, once they're passed all over again by this congress, plus the John Lewis Voting act. A big battle in the senate, no doubt. And then in add in court fights.

We'll win some and lose some, but we'll win a whole lot more and they lose a whole lot more. For now they're going after regaining control of congress and state houses in 2022, of course.

They could potentially rig things to such a point that it would be impossible for a Democrat to ever win the presidency again, and we would have de facto single party rule.

Voting rights legislation is something that absolutely must be passed.
