Robert Sanford, alleged to have thrown a fire extinguisher at police during the Capitol insurrection, will be released pretrial with a GPS monitor.
As a public defender, I represented a man sent to jail for allegedly stealing cans of baby formula.

(12,463 posts)For one, a lot of the accused are charged with the same offense that a Code Pink individual gets charged with when they disrupt Congress. It's a very light offense.
Two, the more serious and violent charges may be plea bargained down to avoid a trial. Why avoid a trial, you may ask?
Simple answer:
1) Change of Venue Requests. They move the trial 50 miles out of town into "Burning Cross County" and it's a done deal.
2) Jury consultants. Try explaining to an appellate Court why you wouldn't allow Trump voters on a jury.
3) The trials themselves will be bad for the nation. They will argue that they did nothing worse than protestors during the Summer of 2020 and are being unfairly treated. It will be a clusterfuck.
I'm hopeful that the professional Gov't prosecutors nail some ass to a wall... but I'm not optimistic.

(46,340 posts)I used to know a guy who stole cans of baby formula to sell them on the street for his drug habit.
I lost track of him after he was caught as a habitual offender.
Was the guy you represented like this?

(1,300 posts)Planning for and response to this travesty.
And of course with the corruption that the yam exhibited, introduced into the system with his sorry, unqualified sycophantic appointments (looking at you, Barr), and fostered, it is tough to put much faith in the FBI and senior decision-makers throughout the system spending nearly as much energy on digging out and revealing the dirt as they will be covering their asses.

(6,477 posts)The point is to extend that to the baby formula guy, not to extend exorbitant cash bail to the fire extinguisher guy.
